Must be at least 18 years of age Be a citizen of the United States Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers and have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years Specific Duties and Responsibilities
This Correctional Officer Captain position is located at Liberty Correctional Institution. The incumbent in this position has regulatory responsibilities and is subject to the provisions of Chapter 60L-36, Florida Administrative Code. The Officer assigned to this position supervises Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants on any security post and shift. This position serves as the initial Commander during emergency situations and plans, organizes, and coordinates the activities of all Correctional Officers and Correctional Officer Sergeants assigned to a shift. Duties include, but are not limited to: Delegate post assignments and specific duty assignments, coordinate leave use, and ensure accurate attendance and leave reports. Work with lead officers to ensure proper security coverage. Conduct periodic individual counseling with staff to outline problem areas and assign additional duties or instructions. Supervise searches for contraband and conduct daily inspections of buildings and grounds. Inspect physical plant for security concerns and sanitation standards. Function as facility manager during non-administrative hours. Circulate throughout the institution observing staff performance; conduct performance evaluations; schedule and coordinate training programs; provide continuous training in security procedures and performance. Take and recommend disciplinary actions to higher level management. Supervise and coordinate body cavity searches as authorized; authorize non-emergency applications of use of force. Supervise inmates and manage housing areas; enforce rules and sanitation standards; transport inmates with approved restraints and in accordance with laws, policies, and procedures. Conduct accurate head counts, custody of inmates outside secured perimeter, and escorts inside secured perimeter; inventory personal property and issue receipts. Perform crisis intervention, including subduing violent inmates, defending persons, or preventing escapes using approved methods. Maintain facility security; conduct contraband searches; visual inspection of body cavities if applicable. Observe inmate behavior to identify mental or emotional disorders and refer as needed. Provide emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters, and accidents (CPR, first aid, evacuation procedures, etc.). Conduct inspections and surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, and areas; ensure proper security; maintain good observational skills. Maintain inventory records; issue and receive property and equipment. Attend mandatory and other training; perform other related duties as required. Contacts and Support
