Position Description Summary/Purpose The Assistant Athletic Trainer is primarily responsible for assisting the head athletic trainer in the management of the sports medicine department. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting with the direction and coordination of all coverage and services of the athletic training room, assisting with the management of student-athlete medical care, assisting with insurance procedures, and rehabilitation of student-athletes. The athletic training staff will work within the guidelines set forth by the NATA, NCAA and the State of Connecticut to ensure the health and welfare of the University of Bridgeport intercollegiate student athletes.
Essential Job Functions / Primary Responsibilities
Assist with the day to day operations of the athletic training room.
Evaluation/treatment of injury/illness to intercollegiate student-athletes; design and modify appropriate individual rehab of post-surgical/post-injury conditions.
Provide emergency medical coverage during athletic events/practices/travel for teams; refer ill/injured athletes to health services/team physicians/consultants regarding injuries/illnesses/care.
Conduct work in a safe manner and follow all safety practices.
Administration of Department athletic injury insurance policy; maintain medical/administrative records.
Clinical supervision for affiliated curriculum athletic training education program.
Communicate effectively with coaches/student athletes on injury status/playing limitations/counseling/recovery/health conditions.
Other Functions
Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
Maintains professional development and training; stays current with trends.
Assists other department staff as needed to promote a team effort.
Qualifications Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Demonstrated commitment to developing and fostering best practices and policies to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, and build an environment in which all members of the University community are treated with respect and dignity.
NATABOC certification and eligibility for a Connecticut State License required.
First aid, CPR, AED certification required.
Ability to supervise student athletic trainers.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-faceted work environment.
Minimum Required Qualifications Education, Training and Experience
Bachelors and Masters degree required.
NATABOC certification and eligibility for a Connecticut State License required.
Ability to travel, work evenings, and weekends as needed.
First aid, CPR, AED certification required.
Special Requirements
Valid license & insured vehicle.
NATABOC Certification.
Physical And Mental Requirements Work Environment: None. The following physical activities and environmental conditions may be encountered.
Outdoor weather conditions; work near moving mechanical parts; risk of electrical shock; exposure to fumes or airborne particles; vibration.
Standing, walking, sitting; talking and hearing; using hands/fingers to handle/feel; climbing or balancing; bending, pulling, pushing; driving.
Lifting requirements: up to 100 pounds; vision requirements as applicable.
