AmeriCorps Expanded Learning Mentor Position Description
Position Title: Full Time Member, 1200 hr (9 Months)
Stipend Amount: $2,500
Service Term: October 2025 - June 2026
Reports to: School Site Coordinator and AmeriCorps EXL Program Coordinator
Overview
AmeriCorps EXL offers a meaningful opportunity to support students' academic growth and personal development while being part of a dedicated team making a lasting impact in schools. We are seeking proactive, adaptable, enthusiastic, and dedicated AmeriCorps EXL Mentors to support the academic and social emotional development of students in local area schools of Santa Rosa, California. EXL Mentors lead Active Recess activities with students and are placed at one school site for the entire school year (commuting among school sites is not a daily requirement). Program Overview: The goal of the AmeriCorps EXL program is to provide comprehensive support to students. All students at the school site benefit from organized, collaborative games and conflict resolution during recess and lunch. Students in need of additional supports will be assessed and assigned targeted services in literacy or math tutoring and/or placed in a social emotional mentoring group. Responsibilities
Active Recess: Facilitate structured activities to encourage participation in games/sports while building conflict resolution skills during core day and after school. Daily engagement: Assign and lead a daily game with students, focusing on supporting positive student behaviors. Academic Tutoring: Work with students who are academically below grade level in literacy and/or math; lead daily 30-minute tutoring sessions with students 1-to-1, in pairs, or in small groups at least 4 days a week; students attend tutoring for half of the school year. Lesson planning: Create and implement lesson plans with provided curriculum or by the mentor. Mentoring: Lead 30-minute mentoring sessions with students 1-to-1, in pairs, or in small groups; one to two sessions per week; sustain support for the same students throughout the school year. Expanded Learning Support: Support the after-school program COOL School through engaging with groups of students during homework hour, and lead physical, interpersonal and enrichment activities; support Spring Break and summer programs. Professional development: Participate in training and professional development; participate in National Service events. Areas of Responsibility and Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age (17 with parental approval). Clear criminal background check (DOJ and FBI; National Sex Offender Public Database). Must have at least a high school diploma or a GED by start date. Must be a citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States (DACA not accepted due to federal grant restrictions). Passion for education and working with youth of all backgrounds. Organized, responsible, flexible, motivated and professional; high standards of safety and compliance with safety policies and rules. Service Commitment
Full-time 1200 Hour Member; 10-month contract with some weekends and evenings for additional service events to fulfill contract requirements. Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am to 6pm daily over 10 months. If school site is closed per district calendar, no service is expected. In-person service at school sites; members must live within a reasonable commute distance from their site. Benefits
Monthly Living Stipend of $2,500 (10 Month contract). Eligibility for CalFresh (CA’s food stamp program). $250 Moving Stipend for applicants moving from over 250 miles from the service site. Federal Student Loan deferment and interest repayment. Extensive Professional Development and experiential learning opportunities. Please note:
