What You Will Do Are you ready to begin a career in verification, validation, uncertainty quantification (VVUQ) and machine learning? If so, we encourage you to learn more about our student openings in the Computational Physics: Verification & Analysis group (XCP-8) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. You will work with the Computational Physics: Verification & Analysis group (XCP-8) at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. You will work with a multidisciplinary team on developing visualization and analysis workflows for large scale simulation data using Ensight and/or ParaView. A background in a relevant field of physics or engineering is preferred (e.g. nuclear, hydrodynamics, fluid dynamics, shock physics, turbulence, solid mechanics, material strength, material failure, plasma physics, radiation transport, and/or magnetohydrodynamics). A self-motivated, creative researcher will find this environment conducive to intellectual and professional growth. As a post-master's student, you will receive mentoring from an expert team of researchers.

What You Need

Computational Physics and High Performance Computing — experience performing computational physics simulation and analysis on HPC architectures (e.g., computational fluid dynamics, hydrodynamics, finite element analysis, etc.).

Physics Visualization — experience with at least one visualization application for large-scale simulation data: ParaView, VisIt or EnSight.

Research Expertise — research in data science and/or computational physics areas (e.g., fluid dynamics, solid mechanics, materials, equation of state, high explosives, high-energy-density physics, radiation transport, validation, uncertainty quantification, optimization, machine learning, or related).

Programming — strong skills in Fortran, C++, or Python; or experience with Matlab or R may be substituted.

Learning Agility and Communication — ability to rapidly learn new technical skills; ability to work and communicate effectively in a diverse team environment through peer-reviewed journal publication or conference proceedings; ability to communicate research to interdisciplinary audiences.

Education/Experience — Masters degree in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, or closely related discipline. The candidate must be within 3 years of completion of the bachelor\'s degree at the time of review, or will have completed all requirements by commencement of the appointment. Additionally, the candidate should not be enrolled in another graduate program at time of appointment.

Q-Clearance — Must be able to obtain a Q-clearance (which generally requires U.S. citizenship and no illegal drug use within the past 12 months).

Desired Qualifications

Proficiency with Python and VTK

Proficiency with Ensight, Paraview, or other physics visualization software

Proficiency working with computational physics simulation datasets.

Proficiency with tools and workflows for modern software development (e.g., Git, GitLab/GitHub, unit/integration tests, Docker, SQL databases).

Experience working on classified computing systems.

Where You Will Work Located in beautiful northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security.
