Academic Advisor (Pro 2 or Pro 3) at University of Minnesota The CSE Academic Advising Office serves approximately 6,000 undergraduate students across 20 majors in 13 academic departments. Advisors meet with individual students regarding their interests and goals. Advisors assist with recruiting efforts; one-on-one, group, and drop-in academic advising; special events; and orientation for the approximately 1,800 new students each year. Advisors teach the College’s first-year course, CSE 1001, and are assigned a caseload of students within a subset (cluster) of majors. This position reports to an Assistant Director of Academic Advising. Position Overview

The position may be filled at Pro 2 or Pro 3, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary ranges: Pro 2: starting salary $49,000–$54,000 Pro 3: starting salary $51,235.23–$61,000 The level and salary are determined by the chosen candidate’s qualifications, background, and experience. Responsibilities

Pro 2

65% College Academic Advisor for an assigned caseload of advisees Use a holistic advising model to guide and support students in academic, personal, and career decisions. Build trust and support retention and degree progress through diverse contacts (orientation, appointments, workshops, email). Review progress reports at key academic markers (probation, major declaration) to determine next steps. Advise on registration decisions to ensure timely progress. Build relationships across the university and connect students with resources for success. Incorporate understanding of career services and student engagement into advising. Guide students in understanding and following academic and curricular policies; refer complex questions to supervisors as needed. 25% Program Development and Management Assist with academic advising and student services initiatives (summer orientation, workshops, curriculum development, standards, diversity and inclusion programming, major and career exploration, outreach, engagement). Serve as a liaison to academic departments; foster collaboration and accurate communication of policies and resources. Identify and resolve enrollment management issues affecting course access and degree progress. Contribute to advising initiatives and proactive outreach programs. Analyze student data to evaluate programs and provide recommendations. 10% Instruction, Professional Development, & Service Support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives; participate in D&I Alliance and mentor programs with corporate partners. Engage in university-wide DEI efforts and training. Support the CSE 1001 course by teaching a section, mentoring undergraduate TAs, or curriculum development. Contribute to recruitment, outreach, career services, student engagement, and events; serve on committees as needed. Engage in professional development opportunities within the College, University, and broader community. Pro 3

65% College Academic Advisor for an assigned caseload of advisees Guide and support students to become self-reliant and to make reflective academic, personal, and career decisions. Influence retention and degree progress through relationship-building and multiple contact strategies across the academic lifespan. Analyze progress reports to determine appropriate next steps for success. Build networks to help students navigate a large university. Develop and integrate understanding of career services and student engagement into advising. Coach students on registration choices for timely progress. Use independent judgment to assist with university policies and procedures. 25% Program Development and Management Lead or assist with advising initiatives and programs (summer orientation, workshops, curriculum development, standards). Support student services initiatives (diversity programming, major/career exploration, outreach, engagement). Serve as a liaison to academic departments; address enrollment issues. Develop proactive outreach and communications to students; analyze data for program enhancements. 10% Instruction, Professional Development, & Service Support DEI initiatives and programs; mentor partnerships with corporate partners; foster belonging within CSE. Engage in university DEI training and certificates. Support CSE 1001 by mentoring TAs or curriculum development. Serve on committees and participate in recruitment, outreach, and events. Master’s degree in related fields (e.g., higher education, student affairs, counseling) One or more years of college-level academic advising Understanding of student development theories Familiarity with the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Ability to interpret complex policies and disseminate detailed information Ability to work independently and collaboratively; handle conflicts Experience working with STEM students Experience with career development programming Experience in developing and implementing programming for diverse student bodies Flexibility in a changing environment Experience with systems such as PeopleSoft, APAS, and APlus Ability to initiate projects and see them through About The Department

The College of Science and Engineering Student Services provides holistic support to undergraduate students, with diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice as a cornerstone. Services include major and career exploration, academic planning, career coaching, job/internship search strategies, international experiences, leadership opportunities. The department comprises about 40 staff across six units: Academic Advising, Career Services, International Programs, Operations and Support, Recruitment and Outreach, and Student Engagement and DEI.
