Overview

The purpose of this position is to facilitate the justice process by conducting investigations into serious crimes. This position investigates serious crimes in the community, which involves interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, compiling evidence, liaising with other professionals, and writing reports. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not supervise other employees. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Conducts investigations of serious crimes, including those committed against children, homicides and aggravated assaults with serious physical injuries or weapon involvement. Conducts interviews with witnesses, victims, and suspects to compile usable information for completion of investigation. Collects and preserves all possible evidence; writes search warrants and photographs scenes. Maintains contact with deputies and other law enforcement agencies/officers to draw on information and compare to own investigations. Maintains contact and positive working relationship with County Attorney and related investigators. Writes complete and concise reports for investigations. Inspects pawn shops and performs patrol duties. Performs other duties as assigned. BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no responsibility over any types of budget. PROJECT RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides project resource allocation based on pre-approved resources on technology projects. ORAL COMMUNICATION DUTIES

This position explains County procedures or processes, trains colleagues, gives presentations, leads group discussions and negotiates or persuades. WRITTEN COMMUNICATION DUTIES

This position creates or edits documents, internal memos, emails and reports. INTERACTIONS WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC

Interacts extensively with employees, customers, the general public, vendors, regulatory bodies, and other groups and/or individuals and Institutions over the telephone, by email, and/or in person. INTERACTIONS SPECIFICALLY WITH CUSTOMERS

Always (More than 85% in a year). MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field. MINIMUM YEARS OF DIRECTLY RELATED EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Five (5) years experience; or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. PROFESSIONAL CREDENTIALS REQUIRED

Arizona Post Law Enforcement Certification. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

Training; communications and media; law and government; law enforcement; interview and interrogation training; working knowledge of securing search warrants; completing detailed reports; collecting and preserving evidence and documentation of crime scenes. Principles and practices of criminal investigation; general trial preparation techniques; methods and standards for conducting investigative interviews; processes for locating victims, witnesses and suspects; processes and procedures for providing evidentiary technical support; processes and protocol for conducting field investigations; case follow up procedures. SKILLS REQUIRED

Ability to speak clearly and articulate events that transpired during an investigation for court proceedings; categorize and group data, focus, multi-task, deductive reasoning. Other abilities needed to perform as a detective: read and write above high school level, recognize problems, solve problems using deductive reasoning, consider risks, options and benefits, make sense of multiple data, maintain calm demeanor in stressful situations, maintain mental response and quickness, memorize and recall. PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Occasionally required to physically restrain persons. Occasionally stands to attend to watchmen duties and perform public safety duties; routinely stands to attend to reported incidents. Regularly sits to complete report, operate computers and complete a program. Occasionally lifts under 10 lbs. of work related materials, equipment or tools; and lifts up to 75 lbs. Requires dexterity for peacekeeping tools, for keyboard operation, special gadgets and special machines. Incumbents in this position may be required to occasionally intervene to break citizen altercations; routinely bend; occasionally kneel and twist to conduct evidence analysis and crime scene investigations. WORK ENVIRONMENT

Incumbents in this position routinely spends time in office environment; occasionally spends time in outdoor areas and in library and automobile; rarely spends time in tight spaces. SAFETY RISK EXPOSURE

Incumbents in this position are subject to physical danger such as dangerous vehicles, gun shots and physical attacks; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, drugs, infectious and communicable diseases; mechanical hazards, chemical hazards, electrical hazards, blood-borne pathogens, communicable diseases, fire hazards, explosives, respiratory hazards, extreme temperature, noise and vibration, wetness and humidity; subject to extended periods of intense concentration in review of crime scenes, investigations and preparing law enforcement reports. Occasionally, incumbents in this position may become exposed to verbal abuse by customers or citizens either in-person or through telephone. PROTECTIVE GEAR & SAFETY MANUALS

Incumbents in this position are required to constantly follow written safety procedures and manuals relevant to the division or department. May be required to wear or use safety equipment or tools at all times while on duty and required to utilize compliance devices. Occasionally incumbents in this potion are required to wear hearing protection, eye protection devices, and hard hats. CONSEQUENCES OF ERROR
