Type One Energy . About Type One Energy Group is mission-driven to provide sustainable, affordable fusion power to the world. Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023, the company is led by a team of globally recognized fusion scientists with a strong track record of building state-of-the-art stellarator fusion machines, together with veteran business leaders experienced in scaling companies and commercializing energy technologies. Location: Knoxville, TN, or Oxford, United Kingdom Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits Contract: Permanent, full time Reporting to: Director, Nuclear & Fuel Cycle Engineering Role objective: Lead in developing, designing, and optimizing tritium processing, storage, distribution, and control systems in support of Type One Energy’s high-field stellarator designs. The candidate should have experience ranging from fundamental tritium science to practical tritium operations, including a background in the design of tritium, hydrogen, or related systems. This role supports the development of our Tritium Fuel Cycle program for both a Fusion Pilot Plant and future Stellarator Power Plant systems. Your Role

Serve as the responsible officer for a fuel cycle subsystem, ensuring clear development pathways and efficient, streamlined system designs. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to conceptualize, design, and implement tritium system processes to meet fuel cycle sustainability objectives. Conduct comprehensive process simulations and modelling to assess efficiency, feasibility, and safety of the responsible subsystem. Apply modelling to simulate the behavior of key subsystems and support iterative refinement of the fuel cycle architecture. Contribute to the development of fuel subsystems from design, testing, and technology development perspectives. Analyze data and perform research to identify areas for process improvement and optimization for the responsible subsystem. Prepare technical reports, mass and energy balances, scopes of work, presentations, and publications to disseminate findings. Work with a multidisciplinary team of Scientists, Engineers, and Technicians to foster a collaborative environment and integrate tritium considerations into product development. Collaborate with external partners, including academic institutions, research organizations, and industry partners, to explore collaborations and stay at the forefront of fusion technologies. Assist with the preparation of protocols and procedures for the safe handling of tritium for experiments pertaining to the subsystem. Be accountable for the quality and accuracy of work and provide transparent feedback on timelines and resource requirements. What You’ll Need

Strong educational background in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Materials Engineering or a related field. Fundamental understanding of first principles for hydrogen/tritium physics and chemical/gaseous processing. In-depth knowledge of tritium systems in one or more areas: catalysis, reactor operation design, metal hydride storage materials, and/or tritium permeation barriers. Experience with getter beds, cryogenic gas separation, vacuum systems, gloveboxes or hydrogen absorption materials is a plus. Knowledge of tritium transport (TMAP, FESTIM, COMSOL) and/or process simulation tools (e.g., Aspen Plus, HYSYS); practical high-fidelity tritium transport simulation experience is a plus but not required. General knowledge of nuclear codes and standards, and best practices. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data and develop innovative solutions.
