The Senior Group Fitness Instructor (Evidence-Based) plays a critical role in delivering structured, research-supported wellness programs specifically designed for older adults. This role focuses on promoting healthy aging, physical activity, and social connection through evidence-based formats that have been approved. Responsibilities include leading classes, assisting with participant evaluations, and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment. While certification in programs such as SAIL, Matter of Balance, or Tai Chi for Arthritis is preferred, training will be provided for the right candidate. Certification in at least one evidence-based program is required within 30 days of hire. What You Should Bring

We’re seeking an enthusiastic, compassionate, and reliable individual with a passion for promoting the wellness of older adults. The ideal candidate will: Possess a nationally recognized group fitness or wellness certification. Demonstrate strong communication, leadership, and motivational skills. Be willing to obtain certification in an evidence-based program within 30 days of hire. Have experience leading group sessions, especially for older adults. Show ability to follow structured curricula and manage class logistics. Exhibit professionalism, punctuality, and a commitment to participant safety. Be comfortable with basic administrative tasks, including data tracking, scanning, and using digital tools. Your Impact

As a Senior Group Fitness Instructor (Evidence-Based), you will: Lead engaging, research-based fitness classes that enhance physical health, emotional well-being, and social interaction. Facilitate a welcoming environment that promotes safety, independence, and participation. Work collaboratively with City staff and utilize department resources for program success. Support Alexandria’s senior community by expanding access to high-quality wellness programming. About the Department

The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) enriches the lives of Alexandria residents through diverse programming, well-maintained public spaces, and inclusive cultural activities. RPCA is nationally accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA), having met 155 rigorous best-practice standards in the industry. High School Diploma and three (3) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. First Aid training. Current certification in a nationally recognized fitness or wellness discipline. Two (2) or more years of experience instructing older adult group fitness or wellness programs. CPR and First Aid certification. Knowledge of fitness assessment techniques, program modifications, and evidence-based health practices. Weekday morning availability is highly preferred to meet the needs of our most active senior participants. This position requires the passing of a criminal background check
