The primary role of the Educational Interpreter is to facilitate communication among deaf and hard-of-hearing students and their hearing peers and teachers. The Educational Interpreter provides interpreting and support services to a deaf and hard-of-hearing student in the early childhood program.

The primary role of the educational interpreter is to serve as a facilitator of communication to interpret.

Provide expressive and voice interpreting for a deaf and hard of hearing student in classes (this may include American Sign Language, Manually coded English, Pidgin Signed English, and/or Oral Interpreting). Under the supervision of the teacher, provide tutoring services as necessary for a deaf and hard of hearing student when it does not interfere with the task of interpreting. Participate in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Activities may include team meetings, Individual Education Plan conferences, Multi-disciplinary Team meetings, and/or Collaborative Student Intervention Team meetings. Input from the interpreter may involve information regarding communication strategies and progress related to the child’s use of the interpreter. Serve as a liaison to promote inclusive interactions between the deaf and hard-of-hearing student, hearing peers, and staff. Lead or assist in providing lessons to hearing students and staff in regards to sign language use. Provide interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities, and parent meetings when necessary. Interpreting services provided outside of normal school hours would be compensated accordingly. At times, when it does not interfere with their service as interpreters, educational interpreters may volunteer or be asked by the teacher to assist with some of the more routine classroom duties. Use scheduled preparation time to preview materials, conference with teachers, record data in logs, research signs, etc. Maintain professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the national Registry of interpreters for the Deaf. (see altered Code for Educational Interpreters)
