Overview Truman College's Writing and Reading Center is seeking a part-time writing Tutor to provide students with tutoring and instructional support within the tutoring center and in classes as embedded tutors. Spanish bilingual candidates are preferred. The Writing and Reading Center is a study space designed to help students thrive academically. Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work, and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in reading and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors and provide online tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses.

Responsibilities

Provide academic assistance and tutoring to students on an individual basis.

Tutor students to help them gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and improve their academic success.

Craft effective tutoring plans to address tutee weaknesses and strengths; motivate students and provide confidence to feel successful.

Provide students with learning strategies including ways to improve study skills and retention, how to organize work, effective use of time, and how to build better study habits.

Schedule individual tutoring sessions at the college’s Tutoring/Learning Resource/Academic Support Center based on student requests for tutoring in a specific subject area.

Assist the tutee in problem solving and applying critical thinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline or subject area.

Help students develop positive attitudes and a high level of motivation toward learning and studying, build self-confidence and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.

Tutor students and provide strategies to develop effective study habits and skills to improve academic capabilities.

Prepare students for standardized testing and provide strategies to overcome test anxiety.

Participate in tutor orientation and attend professional development and training sessions to increase competency in subject areas and improve tutoring skills.

May conduct academic skill reviews and lead workshops on academic skills.

Provide ongoing communication with students, instructors and academic advisors regarding academic progress of individual students.

Maintain records on tutoring activities and provide periodic student assessments and evaluations as required.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a field related to the subject(s) being tutored, OR similar technical certifications and training. Specific additional requirements or certifications may be required depending on the assignment area.

Bachelor’s or higher in a field related to college level writing, reading, or ESL.

Ability to provide bilingual tutoring in Spanish, highly preferred.

Availability to work mornings and afternoons, Monday through Thursday, and/or Saturday mornings, preferred.

Completion of tutoring certification preferred.

Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the post-secondary instructional level is strongly preferred.

Experience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse student body is highly desirable.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Proficiency in the subject area(s) to be tutored; college level composition and reading.

Knowledge of effective tutoring techniques and strategies in subject area(s) and strategies for improving students’ study skills.

Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Initiative, attention to detail, dependability, and technology savviness.

Salary and Benefits

Salary Range: $17.48 - $24.59 per hour.

Offered salary determined by collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
