Job Summary The assistant coach is responsible for assisting the head coach with the high school program in his/her sport, assists in establishing goals, evaluating the program, and determining budgetary needs, enforces all MPS rules, conference rules and WIAA rules for athletes. Maintains a safe environment during practices and contests, assists the head coach in establishing an award system, recruits athletes, promotes his/her sport within the school and community, and is knowledgeable of current sport rules.

Position Summary Organization of the program

Recruits students for participation within MPS guidelines

Assists the head coach in conducting orientation meetings at feeder schools in conjunction with other coaches

Establishes season goals and evaluates the season in conjunction with the head coach

Conducts organizational meetings with athletes

Establishes practice times for his/her team in conjunction with the head coach

Establishes season rules in conjunction with the head coach

Assists head coach in arranging for practice facilities

Coaches during practices and games

Conducts daily practice sessions for his/her team

Attends all scheduled games for his/her team and coaches the assigned team

Assists head coaches in coaching varsity contests when possible

Maintains a safe environment during practices and games

Makes certain there is a first aid kit available at all times

Establishes rules of safety for practices and games in conjunction with the head coach

Supervises the locker room before and after practice

Prepares accident reports and submits them to the proper authorities

Summons medical assistance if needed in case of injury

Keeps emergency notification records for all athletes readily available and notifies the proper individuals in case of accident or injury to an athlete

Maintains current knowledge regarding the extent of any athletic injury and rehabilitation of the athlete

Must maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications. Copy of cards must be on file with the athletic director

Coach must ride with athletes on bus to and from athletics contests

Scheduling

Assists the head coach in establishing non-conference schedules and any sub-varsity schedules necessary

Contracts officials for all non-conference and any sub-varsity contests as necessary for his/her assigned team

Determines transportation needs for his/her assigned team in accordance with existing policy and submits properly completed forms to head coach

Supplies and Equipment

Assists the athletic director and the head coach to issue and collect all uniforms and equipment

Stores all uniforms and equipment securely during the season

Requests the purchase of supplies and equipment to the head coach

Forms Management

Makes certain that all prospective athletes have completed the appropriate forms and forwards them to the athletic director and/or head coach

Maintains appropriate individual records for athletes

Completes and forwards all entry forms by the due date

Submits all required forms to the proper authorities

Meetings

Attends the schools athletic council meetings

Attends meetings as required by the Interscholastic Athletics Office

Attends periodic meetings called by the head coach for the coaching staff of the sport

Public Relations

Promotes the sport and the total athletic program within the school and the community

Assists the athletic director and the head coach in the preparation of promotional items and programs

Cooperates with the media

Works cooperatively with community groups

Works cooperatively with other members of the coaching staff and the athletic director

Rules

Is knowledgeable of all conference, MPS and WIAA rules

Is knowledgeable of all current rules in the sport

Attends clinics periodically to upgrade knowledge

Supervision Required Reports to the School Athletic Director

Job Requirements

Previous experience coaching high school students

CPR/FIRST AID/AED certification

Working Environment Contributes as a team member to a recreational atmosphere which is friendly, cooperative, efficient and professional.
