The AVP of Marketing and Distribution reports directly to the President/CEO and is a key member of the Berkley Mid‑Atlantic executive leadership team. This leader is responsible for strategic planning and overall management of marketing and distribution disciplines to ensure profitable growth. In collaboration with other departments, this role executes Berkley Mid‑Atlantic Group’s marketing strategy, maximizing shareholder value and risk‑adjusted returns.

Senior Underwriter – Responsibilities

Build dynamic relationships with independent agencies, maintaining a strong distribution channel.

Drive written premium growth and maximize renewal retention while delivering a high degree of customer satisfaction.

Strengthen relationships and educate agents to maximize opportunities and achieve profitable growth.

Achieve new business premium, renewal premium retention and rate change objectives.

Evaluate new and renewal information to determine risk acceptability, terms and conditions, and pricing within company guidelines and granted underwriting authority.

Utilize underwriting tools to determine acceptable risk characteristics, accurate exposure classifications, and set adequate property limits to accomplish appropriate insurance coverage and review and quote business for assigned agents.

Order and review inspections to confirm accounts written are consistent with preliminary underwriting information, acting when inspections reveal unacceptable risk characteristics.

Determine if facultative reinsurance is needed, factoring reinsurance cost in gross pricing, completing cession procedures, documenting files, and following established workflow procedures to ensure proper reporting/accounting.

Qualifications

BA/BS degree preferred.

4+ years of experience as an Underwriter in Commercial Property & Casualty.

Demonstrated success in developing and maintaining positive relationships.

Excellent communication skills, including listening for solutions.

Willingness to collaborate with colleagues and present in a way that influences others.

Analytical thinking about business problems, making recommendations and proposing solutions.

High‑energy self‑starter who is resilient and has an entrepreneurial spirit.

Ability to sell and influence others.

Goal‑oriented achiever who delivers results.

Basic knowledge of computer programs in a Windows environment, including Word, Excel and Email is mandatory.

Prior experience with online underwriting tools preferred (e.g., Silver Plume, Reference Connect).

Advanced professional insurance coursework (e.g., CPCU or AU) or completion of other insurance‑related classes is preferred.
