This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gesture language used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada, and more importantly, focuses on the development of basic conversation skills emphasizing the culture and history of ASL through in-class and out of class requirements. Identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level. Describe and demonstrate American Sign Language classifiers, grammar structure, facial expression, and body movement. Compose ASL Gloss translation from English. Explain basic cultural aspects of the Deaf. Examine and show an understanding of history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor degree and 2 years related professional experience OR Associate degree and 6 years related professional experience. OR - The equivalent. Certain combinations of education, experience, and other accomplishments in the field may be judged as equal to the stated minimum qualifications for these positions. Knowledge & Abilities
