Commercial Credit Senior Analyst, Affordable Housing
A member of the Commercial Credit team that partners with senior team members supporting the duties of underwriting and the ongoing monitoring of a portfolio of credit relationships. Responsible for performing supporting analysis, identifying risk issues, and completing sections of credit analysis to assess the creditworthiness of commercial clients. Primary Responsibilities
Underwrite new credit requests and material modifications from deal screen through approval, recommending additions or removals of conditions as needed. Manage ongoing credit risk of existing loan portfolios through continuous credit monitoring (CCM) activities, enabling timely identification of emerging risk and appropriate actions for loss mitigation. Review all pertinent credit and financial information, determining the need for more thorough investigation or additional information. Complete credit analyses for the Bank’s affordable housing transactions, providing an independent credit quality assessment, risk rating, and identification of credit risks and mitigants. Make structure recommendations based on analysis of scenarios including company base case, bank base case, and downside case. Identify suspicious activity or activity contrary to customer interest as part of ongoing portfolio risk management. Partner proactively with relationship managers (RM) and internal stakeholders throughout the deal process, maintaining timely and accurate risk ratings. Prepare cash flow, collateral schedules, covenant sensitivity calculations, financial models, and guarantor statement analysis as appropriate. Attend client/prospect calls with RMs to gain a thorough understanding of the client and effectively underwrite the proposed transaction. Present analysis or address questions during credit request discussions or committee presentations. Ensure credit policy compliance by verifying adherence to the Commercial Credit Policy and commenting on any risk associated with non‑compliance. Identify risk‑related issues needing escalation to management and promote a culture of belonging and the M&T Bank brand. Maintain internal control standards, including implementation of audit points and issues raised by external regulators. Scope of Responsibilities
Commercial Credit delivers credit decisions for the Bank’s commercial clients throughout the credit lifecycle, from initial analysis to long‑term monitoring. The role interacts with banking relationship managers and internal personnel on credit approvals, working independently with limited supervision and closely with the Lead Underwriter on the team. Education and Experience Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or related field and 2 years’ experience in commercial credit, public accounting, financial statement preparation/analysis. Strong analytical skills with proficiency in financial modeling and credit metrics. Strong verbal and written communication, critical thinking, problem‑solving, attention to detail, and organizational time‑management skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team and a customer‑focused interpersonal approach. Proficiency with Microsoft Office. Education and Experience Preferred
Experience in affordable housing, construction lending, and commercial real estate. Salesforce experience. Large bank experience. Location
