This Ecology Assistant is an AmeriCorps position. This position will aid at least two natural resource programs within the GLKN office. The position will assist programs within the GLKN office with the dissemination of scientific data through the development of code, dashboards, and automatic reporting. Description of Duties
The Great Lakes Inventory and Monitoring Network (GLKN) is a subunit of the National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program, responsible for monitoring ecological ‘vital signs’ in nine National Parks located in Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Vital signs are environmental indicators that help determine if the ecosystems within our National Parks are healthy. This position will assist the vegetation and landscape dynamics monitoring programs within the Great Lakes office. Both programs have been collecting data for approximately 15 years. For about half of the appointment, the participant will work with the GLKN vegetation ecologist to use R programming to import vegetation data from an Access database to create ready-to-summarize spreadsheets. These spreadsheets will be used to create automated data summary reports into an RMarkdown document or similar format. The participant will collaborate with the Network’s data scientist and vegetation ecologist. For the remainder of the appointment, the participant will work with the landscape dynamics lead to develop a dashboard to visualize summarized disturbance data via an R Shiny or similar application. Additional duties could include publishing an integrated long-term landscape dynamics dataset following best practices established by I&M. The aim is to contribute to natural resource management in Great Lakes parks and increase access to data and create digital utilities of broader scientific interest. Keywords
Programming, R, Python, Forest Ecology, GIS, R Shiny, Data Visualization, Data Science, Computer Science, Coding, Remote Sensing, Botany Deliverables
The participant will work with Network scientists to produce code for reproducible reporting and a landscape disturbance data visualizer. An exceptional participant may have opportunities defined in consultation with a supervisor, including developing custom scripts, utilities, or an R package to improve processing, analysis, and visualization, and creating web-based visualization tools for park managers and the public. Qualifications

Excellent oral, electronic, and written communication skills are required. A bachelor’s degree in physical, natural, or computer science is encouraged, but any candidate with coding background and communication skills will be considered.
