Job Summary This position is based out of Tampa, FL. The Assistant Engineer’s primary responsibilities include managing the operation and maintenance of the vessel’s engineering systems under the Chief Engineer’s supervision, including performing routine and emergency repairs, conducting watches, maintaining logbooks, and ensuring crew safety. Key responsibilities involve maintaining mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, from propulsion to auxiliary machinery, while also overseeing the engine room operations for both the tug and barge.
Responsibilities
Assisting the Chief Engineer and other engineering personnel in operating and maintaining the vessel's machinery, including engines, generators, pumps, and refrigeration systems.
Performing regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs on mechanical equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Monitoring and troubleshooting engineering systems to identify and resolve any issues that may arise during the voyage.
Following safety protocols and regulations to ensure a safe working environment for the crew and the vessel's cargo.
Collaborating with other crew members to coordinate operational activities and ensure smooth functioning of the vessel.
Qualifications
USCG Merchant Mariner Credential international and national endorsements capable of foreign voyages.

International STCW Endorsements: Officer in charge of an Engineering Watch (STCW III/1), Medical First Aid Provider (STCW A-VI/4-1), Able Seafarer-Engine (STCW III/5), RFPEW (STCW III/4), STCW Basic Safety Training (STCW VI/1), PSC (STCW VI/2), Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) (STCW VI/6)
National Endorsements: Engineering Officer - Assistant Engineer Limited. (3rd Assistant Engineer of Motor Propelled Vessels Unlimited Horsepower preferred), QMED-Any Rating, Lifeboatman, Ordinary Seaman, Wiper, Steward’s Department (F.H.)
Tankerman Assistant limited to Dangerous Liquid (DL) Cargoes PIC endorsement is preferred
Must hold a valid USCG/STCW medical certificate
Must hold a valid TWIC card and U.S. Passport
Education/Experience
Prior experience as an Assistant Engineer preferred
ABS Nautical Systems NS5 experience preferred
Physical Requirements
Able to work in confined spaces, carrying heavy tools, climbing and descending ladders, consistently able to lift and carry loads at least 40 pounds
Must have current USCG STCW Medical Certificate, renewed every 2 years
