About the Position

We are hiring an

Assistant Behavior Intervention Specialist

( ABIS ) in

Nassau County ! In addition to carrying out all direct care functions of a Direct Support Professional (DSP), the ABIS provides clinical support relating to habilitative, behavioral and psychiatric needs of persons supported by the team under the direction and supervision of the Behavior Intervention Specialist (BIS). This includes educating direct care staff and program leadership on habilitative and Behavior Support Plans, supporting clinical assessments and interventions, ensuring consistent data collection, and providing direct feedback. Key/Essential Functions & Responsibilities

All ABIS personnel perform the following tasks in addition to DSP duties: Lead and supervise direct care staff, ensuring supervision, protection and care of individuals while supporting habilitative and behavioral programming.

Identify, facilitate and schedule community inclusion activities, coordinate resources, secure funding, and document activities.

Provide supervise-and-safety support, communicate level-of-supervision changes to staff, and lead shift meetings as needed.

Apply specialized clinical knowledge of person-specific needs to support individuals, escalate concerns to leadership, and inform staff training and education.

Stay up to date on diagnoses and needs for persons supported and ensure programming aligns with individualized plans.

Collaborate with BIS to implement habilitative, behavioral and psychiatric interventions consistently.

Model person-centered care and guide program staff toward high standards of care.

Implement Behavior Support Plans and use person-centered thinking to prevent escalation.

Train direct care staff using the EMOE system, provide feedback, and ensure proper data collection.

Serve as lead trainer for weekend staff and support staff development in OPWDD Core Competencies.

Contribute to development of treatment plans and habilitative plans with BIS, including goals and outcomes.

Assist with data collection for behavioral and habilitative assessments and maintain data collection systems.

Complete and maintain required paperwork and documentation, including progress notes and person-centered materials.

Attend and participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and regional meetings, providing information and follow-up tasks as directed.

Participate in life plan meetings and contribute to program operations as needed.

Serve as lead on weekend/evening shifts or as requested, maintaining program operations in the absence of supervisors or BIS.

Maintain awareness of program operations and staff performance and escalate concerns as needed.

Complete required trainings and certifications, following YAI policies and clinical recommendations.

Comply with all regulatory requirements including HIPAA.

Operate a YAI vehicle if assigned, with appropriate credentials.

Experienced ABIS may be assigned to the BIS Department, performing ABIS tasks across programs and providing training on behavioral/clinical systems. Provide coverage and training across multiple programs and integrate into program teams.

Communicate behavioral/clinical information to interdisciplinary teams and families as directed, and ensure follow-ups are tracked.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or related Human Services field, and at least six (6) months of experience with individuals with I/DD or with complex social-emotional/behavioral needs; or

Formal training plus at least two (2) years of related experience; or

At least four (4) years of direct care experience in a YAI program in good standing; and

Working knowledge of behavioral/psychiatric conditions and ability to document and communicate information effectively.

Strong written and oral communication skills for documentation and coordination with staff and external providers.

Ability to lead and train others; willingness to learn and teach technical skills.

Foundational certifications: SCIP-R, CPR, and AMAP or Day Services Model Mentorship Training, with additional program requirements within specified timeframes.

Ability to meet physical demands and assist with lifting/moving individuals with or without equipment; ability to handle bodily fluids; and ability to implement emergency interventions per Behavior Support Plan.

Ability to travel for trainings/meetings within the region and to NYC metro area as needed; valid Driver’s License and vehicle certifications as required.

ABIS assigned to BIS Department must also meet the following additional requirements Three (3) years of I/DD experience, including at least one (1) year as an Assistant BIS in a YAI program in good standing; and

Ability to travel to multiple programs and work varying schedules; and

Ability to build productive relationships and work with various teams.

Preferred Qualification Requirements

(desired beyond minimum) Active pursuit of a Master’s degree in clinical or treatment psychology, social work, school psychology, or applied psychology.

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or related Human Services field.

Two or more years of experience in the field of I/DD.
