Position Overview

The Outpatient Coding Specialist will evaluate medical records and charges, as appropriate, to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance with the ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and CPT manuals. Reviews medical records to identify diagnosis codes and procedures relative to the patient’s encounter. Selects the first listed diagnosis and principal procedure, along with other diagnoses and procedures using outpatient ICD-10-CM coding conventions and guidelines, as well as general and disease-specific guidelines. Abstracts appropriate information from the medical record. Queries for clarification from the physician regarding ambiguous or conflicting documentation and medical necessity. Ensures all coding complies with ethical coding standards and regulatory requirements. Maintains confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines. Provides technical guidance and training on medical coding to physicians and staff. Responsibilities

Review medical records to identify diagnosis codes and CPT procedures for outpatient encounters. Select the appropriate principal diagnosis and procedures, and apply coding guidelines accurately. Abstract relevant information from medical records and query physicians when documentation is unclear or conflicting. Ensure coding compliance with ethical standards and regulatory requirements; maintain HIPAA confidentiality. Provide technical guidance and training on medical coding to physicians and staff. Education

High school diploma or equivalent required. Coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, ICD-9/10-CM coding, and/or CPT coding. License

N/A Certification

Certified (or certified within one year of employment) by AHIMA, AAPC, or NHA as one of the following, or other equivalent coding certification: - CPC: Certified Professional Coder; - COC: Certified Outpatient Coder; - CCS-P: Certified Coding Specialist-Physician-based. Once certified, the employee must complete all requirements (including continuing education) to maintain certification. Experience

One (1) year of healthcare-related work experience or coding experience directly applying codes preferred, or an equivalent combination of expertise, education, and training. Reports to

Work is moderately active: sitting with frequent movement around the office and facility, with possible travel to another facility within the service area. May require lifting or moving objects; exposure to body fluids, sputum, and tissues; repetitive motions of wrists, hands, and fingers; and close visual acuity for reading forms and computer screens. Superior customer service skills and professional etiquette; proficient computer skills (keyboard proficiency), MS Outlook, Word; ability to demonstrate clinical judgment across all ages; knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT/HCPCS guidelines; medical terminology; anatomy and physiology; Medicare guidelines; fluent English; ability to research, interpret policies, and apply regulations; independent judgment; excellent written and verbal communication; ability to maintain confidentiality.
