What You’ll Do As a surface mount technology (SMT) operator, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining automated machinery used in the assembly of printed circuit boards (PCBs). In this role, you will be involved in setting up, running, and monitoring SMT production equipment, such as pick-and-place machines, solder paste printers, reflow ovens, and automated optical inspection (AOI) machines. You will ensure proper machine operation, perform basic troubleshooting, and conduct visual inspections to maintain high-quality standards. Attention to detail, adherence to safety and quality procedures, and the ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment are essential. You will also be responsible for electronics assembly, through-hole soldering, and end-of-line testing as well.
Set up and operate SMT machines for circuit board assembly
Load components and materials into machines according to work orders
Monitor machine performance and perform minor adjustments or troubleshooting as needed
Set up and operate potting and coating machines for board assembly
Repair component placement defects as required
Inspect assembled PCBs for defects and ensure compliance with quality standards
Maintain accurate production records and follow all safety guidelines
Responsible for cleaning of all workspaces and assigning cleaning duties as needed
Expected to support electro-hydraulic system production on an as-needed basis
Will be expected to perform other duties, such as wire harness assembly, depending on production needs
Your Experiences & Skills
Engineering degree from an accredited college or equivalent work experience (four years), and four years of experience working in a printed circuit board and/or electronics assembly facility
High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
One to three years of experience with electronic assemblies preferred
One year of fine pitch SMT soldering experience preferred (0402, QFN, QFP, etc.)
Prior experience operating pick-and-place, SMT stencil, reflow ovens, and AOI machines
Preference towards Europlacer, Heller, and Mirtec equipment
Prior experience operating a potting machine and a conformal coat sprayer
Experience working in an ESD-controlled environment
Good organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form
Certifications
Europlacer operator certificate preferred; if not already obtained, you must acquire certification after starting employment
J-STD-001 certificate or equivalent training
J-STD-033 training preferred
IPC-A-610 training preferred
