City Medical Examiner II (Senior Medical Examiner)

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person. Under administrative direction, perform difficult and complex assignments and investigations including cases of suspicious death and deaths resulting from criminal violence, and supervise City Medical Examiner I staff. Order the body to the Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy or other indicated purposes. Perform autopsies when indicated and carry out necessary histological examinations of tissues and other microscopic examinations. Select organs and tissues for toxicological and serologic examinations. Prepare reports on investigation and examination results and file them with the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Certify the cause of death in cases of sudden, unexpected or violence-related deaths, based on postmortem findings and related examinations; exercise discretion in complex and sensitive cases as required. Report findings to proper official agencies as required by applicable law; investigate applications for cremation. Testify before grand juries and in court as an official of the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Provide consultations in neuropathology or pediatric pathology for other pathologists serving in the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. Develop new policies, methods, and techniques in the investigation of deaths. Consult with law enforcement agencies, courts, and other City and governmental agencies on confidential policies and mutual concerns. Perform teaching and administrative duties as assigned. Selected candidates may be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing. This position has been identified as essential. During emergency events, essential positions may require 24-hour availability. Senior Medical Examiners are eligible for a teaching differential and recurring increment payments after their first year. Work Authorization

Qualification requirements for Assignment Level I: A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York and either: Two years of an ACGME residency in anatomic pathology, or three years of an ACGME accredited residency in anatomic and clinical pathology with evidence of at least 30 autopsies; or An ACGME accredited residency in a subspecialty field of anatomic or clinical pathology or other medical/clinical specialty applicable to forensic medicine. Qualification Requirements for Assignment Level II: A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York and one of the following: Board certification in forensic pathology by the American Board of Pathology with either: evidence of having performed at least 200 autopsies; or one year of satisfactory performance at Assignment Level I. Or board certification by the American Board of Pathology in a subspecialty of anatomic or clinical pathology or a related medical/clinical specialty applicable to forensic medicine. Public Service Loan Forgiveness: Eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment programs. Residency: New York City residency is not required.
