Christ Church Anglican Savannah seeks a Director of Music
Located in beautiful Savannah, GA, CCA is a growing Biblical, Spirit-filled, evangelical and family-oriented church committed to excellence in worship, preaching, and liturgy and a blended worship music style. The choirs and ensembles making up the ministry of music offer a wide range of music from the 16th century to the present. The choirs include a Parish Choir, a children’s choir (The Choristers), a 5-octave High School/College-age touring Handbell Choir (The Bells of Christ Church), a small orchestra that accompanies the choirs monthly, an acoustical instrumental/vocal ensemble and contemporary worship leaders. CCA also has a Compline Choir that leads worship during chanted and sung Compline each Sunday evening.
The mature, well-experienced candidate will need to be committed to his or her relationship to the Lord, devoted to Scripture and in tune with the Holy Spirit to lead wholehearted worship for and with the congregation. He or she must be a team player with a humble, joyful heart who is able to work well with all generations of people in a variety of arenas.
Job Summary The Director of Music Ministries serves as a worship leader and a shepherd of the flock of parishioners who give of their time to serve in the church’s music ministry. He or she is to lead and guide a Music Ministry for the parish rather than merely a music program. As the chief musician, he or she leads and trains the choirs and music ensembles of the church in music skills, church history, liturgical traditions and meanings as well as connections to Holy Scripture. He or she must be a fine teacher and communicator. Admittedly, one of the most important roles in the position is to be a lover of congregational song and to enthusiastically nurture it in both beauty and holiness. The offering of excellent music at Christ Church is not an end in itself, it is to serve as a means to a much greater end; the worship of our Lord and the revealing of His glory and His abiding love through the work and nature of His Son Jesus Christ.
Under the direction of the Rector and in cooperation with the Rector and other clergy, the Director of Music Ministries is also responsible for planning or delegating the planning of music for worship services including hymns, psalms, anthems, and spiritual songs as well as Preludes, Postludes and vocal and instrumental solos. He or she works under the authority of the Rector (the principal priest) and their good relationship is essential to success as a ministry team and the worship life of the parish. The Director of Music Ministries also supervises and works closely with the associate Parish Musician (sub-organist/accompanist).
Primary Responsibilities of the Position
Maintain a healthy and robust Christian spiritual life and participate in the devotional life of the church.
Recruit, direct and shepherd choirs joyfully, enthusiastically, and continually.
Choose and lead music along with clergy and other music ministry leaders for worship services including hymns, psalms, anthems, and spiritual songs as well as Preludes, Postludes and vocal and instrumental solos.
Prepare for all rehearsals ahead of time as well as allow for personal rehearsal and practice at the keyboards: organ, piano, harpsichord and orchestra instruments.
Play and coordinate music for weddings and special worship services as needed.
Plan coordinate, supervise, and lead the annual Youth Handbell Choir and the Outreach Tour.
Oversee the maintenance of all musical instruments at the church and the music library.
To submit and manage appropriate budgets for the Ministry of Music, instrument maintenance and purchases, and the purchase and cataloging of appropriate music for choral and instrumental offerings.
Be actively present at weekly staff meetings.
Work well with other staff and leaders to develop ministries and accommodate various schedules and initiatives of the church.
Budget prep and oversight
Maintain all licenses
Planning and prep for all special services (Christmas, Holy Week, Weddings and Funerals)
CCA is looking for someone with the following skills and qualifications
A joy for the Lord combined with a deep faith in Christ in accordance with the Jerusalem Declaration of 2008 (attached)
A high level of organizational and management skills
A mature commitment to teamwork
A deep sense of calling to ministry and worship through a variety musical genres
Works well with and loves children, youth and adults
Excellent organ playing and song leading combined with advanced creative choral teaching skills
A growing knowledge of both Anglican hymnody and liturgy and a commitment to the Anglican tradition
An Openness to all genres of music for worship including contemporary music, gospel spirituals, chants, etc.
A Master’s degree in music preferred.
Experience as a Director of Music Ministries or similar positions.
Time Commitment This is a full-time job that requires flexible hours and weekend hours.
