Overview

Spencer Museum of Art and University of Kansas: Curator for Research. The Curator for Research is central to building an interdisciplinary arts research infrastructure, guiding ARI activities, fostering partnerships across disciplines, and disseminating research concepts through various formats. The role activates the collection, develops exhibitions and platforms to engage campus and broader communities, and provides intellectual and artistic leadership within the museum and beyond. The Curator works within a team, promoting dialogue across departments and disciplines and advancing the museum’s scholarly and creative vision to present the SMA collection as a living archive that motivates interdisciplinary research, creative work, and public dialogue. Position Duties (Responsibilities)

55% - Professional Performance and Research: envision, organize, and nurture ARI programs (inquiries, research convenings, exhibitions); cultivate research partners; develop strategies to sustain interdisciplinary research; stimulate scholarly publications; stay informed on interdisciplinary initiatives; collaborate on research, documentation, interpretation, and publication of SMA collection works; conduct collection research and proposals; present ongoing research at conferences; foster a community of artists and scholars; select and guide ARI faculty and undergraduate research fellows, visiting artists, and external scholars; initiate and contribute to ARI-related grant proposals and funded projects; contribute to digital projects with emphasis on ARI and curatorial web presence. 30% - Supervision and Management: provide strategic vision to the curatorial team, serve on the leadership team, advance curatorial programs, encourage cross-functional collaborations, mentor staff, supervise ARI graduate fellows, lead planning meetings, contribute to grant applications, donor relations, and ARI budget oversight. 10% - Professional Service: contribute to initiatives across the museum and campus, sustain scholarly collaborations regionally and nationally, serve on committees, represent the Museum publicly, and maintain professional affiliations. 5% - Other Duties as Assigned: participate in staff and campus initiatives and trainings, assist with other initiatives as they arise. Required Qualifications

PhD or terminal degree. Twelve or more years of relevant arts, collections and/or museum experience, including demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience. Distinguished professional performance and accomplishments aligned with the Spencer Museum of Art and the field; strong research record; evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration; experience with community engagement and public-facing programs; demonstrated ability to work with higher education partners and the public. Experience in interdisciplinary research across the arts, humanities, sciences and social sciences. Proven ability to work collaboratively on teams and with diverse stakeholders. Application Process
