This is a limited continuous filing exam. Next filing cut-offs: 6/14/2024, 8/2/2024, 10/4/2024, 12/6/2024 (final). Responsibilities Investigate adult offenders or juvenile court referrals. Supervise probationers; participate in institutional care, custody, treatment, and counseling. Knowledge and abilities Principles and practices of probation work; counseling techniques; interviewing; crisis intervention; self-defense; arrest procedures; appropriate use of force and security techniques. Laws relating to criminal justice; causes of crime and delinquency; interview and counseling skills; community resources; search and seizure laws; regulations governing care and treatment of juveniles in juvenile facilities. Ability to analyze behavior patterns; exercise sound judgment; establish effective working relationships; read, write, and speak English at job-appropriate level; prepare concise reports; maintain records; communicate with diverse backgrounds. Minimum qualifications Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, preferably with a degree in social or behavioral sciences. AND Either: One year of full-time paid professional experience in correctional work in a probation, parole, or law enforcement agency; or One year of social casework experience in a County, State, or Federal agency; or One year as an Assistant Probation Officer (formerly Probation Assistant) with Sacramento County; or The equivalent of one year as a Probation Aide (On-Call) with Sacramento County. Notes Full-time experience unless stated otherwise; part-time experience can be pro-rated. Proof of educational or certification requirements must be submitted with the application. On-Call experience: 173.6 hours = 21.7 days = 1 work month. Applicant must submit proof of required education/certifications by the final filing date. Special requirements and conditions Government Code: United States citizenship or eligible permanent resident; be 18+; be fingerprinted; be free from conditions affecting peace officer powers. Criminal history/background check required; felony conviction may disqualify. POS T training completion within one year after appointment. Some assignments may require arming and related fitness and training. Physical requirements include standing, walking, running, stooping, bending, restraining, and potential exposure to hostile individuals. Driver's license: California Class C or higher required at appointment; maintain as required. Hours and probation Hours: irregular hours, holidays, and weekends may be required. Probationary period: six (6) months. Application and testing Apply online by the posted cut-off date (5:00 PM). Supplemental questionnaire responses are required and must be complete and descriptive. Online written examination (weighted 100%) covers probation and parole, juvenile corrections, standards and regulations, counseling and interpersonal skills, English usage and writing skills.
