Under the direction of the Director of Public Safety or designee, the Police Officer patrols assigned areas of property used, owned or occupied by the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and areas adjacent to the University/Hospital to provide a safe and secure environment for all members of the University/Hospital community through alert and vigilant preventive patrol. University Police Officers deliver a wide variety of services to meet the needs of the University, its students, staff, patients, and visitors, and provide emergency coverage in various classifications.
Major Responsibilities
Exercise police powers under M.G.L. Chap. 75 s. 32A in the detection and apprehension of law violators; investigate crimes, accidents, and complaints.
Patrol University buildings and lands, including the hospital, ensuring the protection of persons and property, observing for criminal activity or anything endangering life, health, safety, or property, and report accordingly.
Create and maintain a sense of safety and security within the University/Hospital and adjacent areas, demonstrating courteous and ethical service.
Aid and assist persons in danger of harm or victims of crime, accidents, or illness.
Assist in traffic control, enforce laws regarding traffic and parking.
Maintain order at special events on University lands.
Conduct investigations and submit accurate reports related to law enforcement activities.
Identify and apprehend criminal offenders, participate in court proceedings.
Safeguard monies and securities, provide escort services as needed.
Respond promptly to all emergencies and assignments.
Assist persons seeking directions, information, or assistance courteously.
Secure and record evidence or property properly.
Transport and process prisoners according to policies.
Provide emergency first aid and call for professional assistance when needed, transporting injured persons to medical facilities.
Develop specialized law enforcement skills and participate in community programs and committees.
Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalency.
Eligibility to enter and complete a Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee-approved police academy or equivalent certification.
Ability to obtain a Class A firearm license and certification within 6 months.
Massachusetts driver’s license and ability to travel.
Certification in First Aid & CPR, and physical and psychological fitness as per standards.
Knowledge of laws, regulations, police procedures, and court processes.
Ability to maintain composure under stress and effectively interact with the community.
Ability to supervise work and give clear instructions.
Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to off-site locations.
Successful completion of Department Field Training Program or equivalent training.
The position considers applicants with full-time municipal police academy certification or those eligible for a waiver from the Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee.
