This is a repost. Attain the necessary training and state certifications to perform intermediate protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. This is a training position in which the police officer trainee will attend the Law Enforcement Academy and pass the state certification exam. The City of Oviedo will pay the costs associated with the Police Academy and the trainee will be responsible for completion of the Police Officer Trainee Program and become a certified police officer for the City of Oviedo with a contract for a two-year minimum commitment.

Responsibilities

Regularly attend the Law Enforcement Academy.

Successfully complete all areas of study while attending the Law Enforcement Academy.

Pass the State of Florida Law Enforcement Certification Examination.

Qualifications Must be at least age 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States. Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED Certificate which meets state standards. Required to possess a valid Florida driver’s License. Must be in good physical condition. Vision: minimum of 20/40 corrected. Must be of good moral character: no felony convictions; no misdemeanor convictions involving moral character, perjury, or false statements as outlined in Florida Statutes. Required to successfully meet agency drug/nicotine use standards and successfully pass a drug/nicotine screen test.

Special Requirements Qualify in the PAT (Physical Abilities Test), successfully enroll in the Law Enforcement Academy; successfully pass the writing sample and a physical fitness examination; sign the Training Reimbursement Agreement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

General knowledge of the geography of the city and location of important buildings.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports.

Ability to deal courteously, but firmly with the public.

Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; skill in the operation of motor vehicles.
