CORRECTIONAL OFFICER 1* - 10072025-71758 – Tennessee Department of Correction. Location: Department of Correction, Mark Luttrell Transition Center, Shelby County. The class is the entry working level in the Correctional Officer sub-series, with potential reclassification after a mandatory training period.
Salary: $4,267.00 per month ($51,204.00 per year). Newly hired Correctional Officers are eligible for a $5,000 sign-on bonus, payable over 18 months. This position requires a criminal background check and a Motor Vehicle Records screening prior to employment.

Responsibilities
Supervises inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas; attends to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs of inmates.
Inspects and patrols grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
Checks in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
Observes inmate behavior; counsels with inmates and families about problems; evaluates inmate room and personal hygiene, attitudes, and submits evaluations to the counseling department.
Attends staff meetings, disciplinary boards, and training (riot control, escape prevention, first aid).
Prepares reports including daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job/pay records, daily counts, and requisitions.
Operates equipment such as two-way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, cameras; may operate motor vehicles.
Ensures inmate safety and, as needed, breaks up fights or potentially dangerous situations.
Communicates and enforces existing policies and procedures.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Applicants must:
Be willing to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons
Be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of application
Be a citizen of the United States
Have good moral character, as determined by investigation
Complete a criminal history disclosure form as approved by the appointing authority
Release all records involving criminal history to the appointing authority
Supply a fingerprint sample for a fingerprint-based criminal history check
Have no felony conviction or have been discharged under other than honorable conditions from any U.S. armed forces
Pass a physical examination and a psychological evaluation as required by ADA and position duties
Submit to a pre-employment drug screening
Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license (in some positions)
Upon appointment, complete prescribed instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy

Typical shifts include multiple work timetables; no guaranteed shift or post is provided.
