Police officer

- The position is responsible for protection of life and property to ensure security and safety on the Waubonsee Community College campuses in accordance with the Illinois Public Community College Act, school policies, department orders, and professional ethics. The position reports to the Campus Police Sergeant. This role requires a demonstrated “spirit of service”; working collaboratively with all facets of the college community to raise awareness, support problem-solving, and engage in proactive policing to foster a respectful culture while executing duties. Responsibilities

Patrol all college campus areas to prevent crimes and mitigate risks; secure buildings; check for safety violations in parking areas, parks, sidewalks, athletic fields and adjacent property. Maintain professionalism and courtesy in interactions with students, staff, the public and local law enforcement officers. Receive medical emergency reports, provide First Responder level first aid, and call for advanced care when necessary. Monitor weather conditions, surveillance cameras and alarm systems; investigate and report suspicious conditions; assist in emergency notifications, evacuations or sheltering plans. Investigate criminal and safety incidents; interview complainants and witnesses; issue warnings, enforce laws, make arrests; protect persons and reduce risk. Perform traffic control on college property, issue citations, investigate accidents, direct traffic and assist with parking. Secure crime scenes, mediate disputes, conduct investigations, gather evidence, obtain statements, apprehend suspects and make arrests. Engage with students, faculty and staff on campus safety issues and operations; address identified needs and concerns. Provide courtesy services such as vehicle assistance, escorts at night, and general college information. Supervise, mentor and train Cadets on assigned shifts. Report malfunctioning alarms, non-functioning exits, broken windows or doors, and other safety concerns. Maintain Annual Firearm Range Qualification and other required certifications. Assist in staff development and community involvement in seminars and workshops related to crime prevention and safety. Prepare necessary reports and records; assist in state and federal mandated reporting. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred. Three years of full-time policing experience with a recognized police agency or college campus law enforcement agency required. Twenty-one years of age or older. Ability to pass psychological and medical fitness-for-duty exams; maintain fitness through ongoing evaluations. Certification in First Responder First Aid/CPR/AED. Currently certified as an Illinois Police Officer or ability to obtain certification within three months of appointment. Valid Illinois driver’s license and acceptable driving record. Ability to pass background investigation and read/interpret safety rules and procedures. Microsoft Office skills; proficiency in police software systems and ability to learn required departmental software. Clear verbal and written communication; ability to interact with individuals and groups; Spanish language skills a plus. Ability to work weekends, nights and occasional on-call hours.
