The Correctional Sergeant supervises the work of Correctional Officers in the safe custody discipline, and welfare of incarcerated persons or parolees on an assigned watch or in a major area; calls roll of Correctional Officers supervised; makes inspection tours to see that Correctional Officers are alert and diligent in the performance of their duties; conveys to superiors complaints made by Correctional Officers and incarcerated persons; takes, receives, and checks periodic counts of incarcerated persons; directs the inspection of quarters of incarcerated persons for contraband, sanitary conditions, and orderliness; examines incoming and outgoing mail; develops procedures and posts orders; provides on-the-job training for Correctional Officer staff; promotes acceptable attitudes and behavior of incarcerated persons; rates incarcerated persons on conduct and productivity; directs visits to incarcerated persons and makes arrangements for showing visitors about the facility; reports infractions of rules and regulations and irregular or suspicious occurrences and takes or recommends appropriate action; prevents escapes and injury by incarcerated persons to themselves and to property; searches for and recaptures escaped incarcerated persons; receives, checks, and issues guns, ammunition, and other supplies and equipment; may participate as a leader in the group treatment program for incarcerated persons or parolees; prepares employee and performance reports; and keeps records and prepares reports; and to do other related work. PLP 2025 requires that each full-time employee receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 2027. Working Conditions About the location – Kern Valley State Prison is located in Delano, the heart of California’s Central Valley. Delano is diverse and offers a range of cultural experiences and recreational activities. KVSP is a Level IV correctional facility with multiple operating components. This is a Correctional Institution open 24 hours/7 days a week, and all positions will be office centered. You will come in contact with incarcerated persons. KVSP is a Level IV facility consisting of four semi-autonomous 180 designed facilities and two stand-alone Administrative Segregation Units, all surrounded by a Lethal Electrified Perimeter Fence. This is a Correctional facility; you will come in contact with incarcerated persons. There is also a Level I Minimum Support Facility on 600 acres. KVSP received Level I’s in June 2005 and Level IV’s in July 2005. Minimum Requirements
