Overview

An Assistant Inspector with the Department of Building and Safety, Housing and Community Investment, Airports or Public Works assists inspectors and receives training in the inspection of buildings and structures, plumbing, heating and refrigeration, electrical installations, grading projects; or as an elevator or pressure vessel safety engineer. Assistant Inspectors may perform owner and property records research, data input, report generation and field data collection. In the Housing and Community Investment Department, they may post notices of inspection at multifamily properties and distribute information to the public; or independently inspect a limited scope. In the Public Works and Airports area, they assist inspectors and may independently inspect a limited scope of streets, sewers, storm drains, bridges and structures, and assist in administration of public works contracts and permits. $67,191 to $70,950; $75,522 to $79,719; $86,860 to $91,725; $97,634 to $103,084 Qualifications

Successful completion of 60 semester or 90 quarter units of coursework from an accredited trade school, college or university;

or One year of full-time paid experience in any one of the following:

Building, civil, or architectural design drafting, surveying or engineering construction; Building or public works inspection; Performing at least helper duties in crafts such as carpentry, electrical, heating and refrigeration, plumbing, iron worker, masonry or operating engineering work, or inspecting public works construction; or any combination of these crafts; Working in property management of multi-family residential properties, coordinating maintenance and repairs; Performing inspections for a private inspection service relating to construction, building, or housing.

Two years of full-time paid experience with City of Los Angeles departments such as Building and Safety, Housing and Community Investment, Public Works, Bureau of Contract Administration, or Los Angeles World Airports processing compliance orders, plans, permits, appeals, property research, certificates of occupancy, inspection requests, or City contracts. Education must be listed in the Education section of the application; failure to provide may disqualify. Completion of 12 semester or 18 quarter units in related areas is highly desired: engineering; construction; design; inspection technology; architectural drafting; geology; civil, mechanical, electrical or fire protection engineering technology; math; or physics. A valid Class C driver’s license is required at filing. DMV record must not have multiple moving violations or at-fault accidents in the last 36 months. Temporary training appointments can be up to five years; failure to complete may terminate. Qualifying education must be from a college or university accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency; approvals are available from the City’s accrediting agencies. Applications are accepted online only during specified filing periods. Examination will include a qualifying multiple-choice test and a weighted interview. The qualifying test may be administered online with a remote proctor and will assess reading comprehension, written communication, job knowledge, and relevant technical terminology. The interview will be used to determine the final score and placement on the eligible list.
