City of New York . The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is comprised of 2,000 employees and has an annual operating budget of over $1 billion. It is dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness in New York City. Collaborating with public agencies and non-profits, DHS works to prevent homelessness, reduce street homelessness, and help New Yorkers transition from shelters to permanent housing. DHS manages over 200 facilities, mainly shelters for over 38,000 adults and children, covering approximately 4 million square feet. The Division of Shelter Intake oversees daily operations of intake and assessment sites for singles, families, and children, ensuring access to shelter for the city's most vulnerable 24/7, 365 days a year. The City is recruiting for one (1) Community Coordinator to serve as a Resource Specialist, who will: Build relationships across diverse communities to provide opportunities for clients and homeless populations regarding housing alternatives to shelters, and support community partners in providing these options. Conduct outreach, interviews, recruitment, and screening for housing options with tenants, landlords, city agencies, and other sources to assess applicant viability. Engage with the community to educate and refer homeless individuals to housing resources through meetings, mediation, and other methods. Collect and verify applicant information, including housing history and income, perform screening interviews, and assess suitability for housing or other resources. Perform field work, including interviews with tenants, landlords, and neighbors. Assess applicants’ psychiatric and substance abuse histories and coordinate with behavioral health specialists as needed. Work Location: 400-430 E. 30TH Street, New York, NY Hours/Schedule: 12am – 8am Thursday - Monday Minimum Qualifications: Baccalaureate degree and two years of community work experience, or High school diploma and six years of relevant community experience, or Equivalent education/experience with at least one year of experience as described above. Preferred Skills: Excellent writing and communication skills Proficiency with CARES and computer skills Additional Benefits: Potential eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness programs.
