An employee works in partnership with the communities they serve to maintain law and order, protect members of the public and their property, prevent crime, and reduce the fear of crime. Work includes conducting investigations and follow-up investigations on scene and suspect; making arrests of offenders, patrolling the City during an assigned shift in a police car or on foot; preventing, detecting, and investigating disturbances and crime; conducting preliminary or detailed physical evidence examinations at crime scenes; apprehending suspects; testifying in court; and executing related assignments.
The employee must exercise judgment, initiative, and calm control when performing duties and enforcing laws of the City of Reidsville and the state. Work involves frequent public contact, which requires tact, firmness, and decisiveness and is performed in accordance with departmental policy and state and federal law, supplemented with specific directions from superior officers.
Classification and Compensation
This classification is considered non-exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Will consider lateral transfer from another law enforcement agency: Police Officer II - $50,566 - $75,849 Police Officer III - $53,094 - $79,642 Master Police Officer - $55,749 - $83,624 Special consideration given to prior service, including transfer of available sick leave, and vacation accrual rates comparable to years of service. Essential Duties and Tasks
Performs preliminary or detailed investigations of accidents or possible crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, gathering physical evidence and presents findings in court; participates, as a part of a team, in major investigations. Investigates different types of crimes including burglary and robbery crimes; installs video surveillance systems and alarm systems in various locations in attempts to solve and prevent crimes. Photographs crime scene and identifies and collects evidence; conducts scene searches and documents all actions within the scene; testifies in court to present evidence. Attends a variety of training sessions and courses to enhance knowledge and skills. Records facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities. Searches warrants relating to illegal narcotics. Assists other departments with crime investigations; works closely with district attorney’s office. Attends community watch meetings. Investigates crimes and works to solve them through gathering evidence, conducting interviews with witnesses and victims, making arrests, serving warrants, testifying in court, writing reports and collaborating with others. Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Considerable knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances, and policies of the police department. Considerable knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods, and equipment. Some knowledge of scientific crime detection and criminal identification methods and procedures. Skill in the use of firearms and other police equipment and in the application of self-defense tactics. Ability to communicate with juveniles and adults. Ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper course of action to be taken. Ability to present effective court testimony. Ability to prepare clear and concise activity reports. Ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective public relations with citizens. Must have a minimum of two years of sworn law enforcement experience. Physical Requirements
Work in this class is described as medium and frequently requires physical exertion to complete tasks. An employee must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, grasping, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Graduation from high school, minimum of two years sworn law enforcement training or experience required.
