The Arkansas Department of Correction/Department of Community Correction (ADC/DCC) Correctional Sergeant is responsible for guarding and directing work of inmates, supervising other correctional officers, observing residents' behavior, and documenting records as required. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency policy. Functions
Schedules, distributes, and guides work assignments of a protective services staff and assists supervisory staff in accomplishing workloads. Supervises inmates by instructing them on work assignments, issuing and retrieving tools, writing disciplinary reports, carrying weapons, and monitoring inmates, including riding a horse if necessary. Prevents attempted escapes, receives inmate counts, and maintains security during shifts. Works as desk officer, maintaining accurate counts, checking building security, assisting in shakedowns, investigating incidents, and maintaining logs. Transports inmates to various locations for work, medical, or meals, and assists with visitation supervision. Inspects living areas for safety and cleanliness and performs other duties as assigned. Frequent shift work, exposure to danger, and emergency on-call duties may be required. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of department policies, public safety methods, and human behavior response. Ability to assign and monitor work, conduct security inspections, write reports, supervise inmates, conduct investigations, and exercise self-defense tactics. Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent, plus two years of correctional security or law enforcement experience, including one year in a leadership role. Additional education or experience may substitute for these requirements with approval. Licenses:
