The primary purpose of this job is to maintain order and supervise inmates in the Athens-Clarke County Correctional Institution, Food Service Center, or Diversion Center. Duties include, but are not limited to: ensuring inmate counts, supervising visitation, maintaining facility security, coordinating inmate placement on outside work details, performing regular inspections, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation, controlling tools and chemicals, providing leadership and supervision over inmates, reacting quickly to emergencies, and performing other duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
Provide inmate security by observing inmate behavior and conducting inspections.
Organize inmate activities and control inmate traffic between activities.
Transport inmates within and outside the facility as needed.
Assist in shakedown and head counts; ensure gates, doors, rooms are secured as scheduled.
Monitor telephone, radio, and intercom; supervise inmates in isolation or sick room as needed.
Fill in for other employees as necessary, including shifting supervision duties.
Serve on disciplinary committees and assist with processing new inmates and outbound processing.
Perform related duties as required.
When Assigned to Food Service Division
Report to the Food Service Coordinator.
Direct unloading and inspection of food and supplies; ensure inventory accuracy.
Observe facility to prohibit contraband; organize inmate work in Food Service areas.
Fill in for other employees as needed, including Assistant Food Service Coordinator or Security Operations.
When Assigned to Diversion Center
Monitor inmate activities and traffic between activities; process new inmates.
Transport inmates as needed; assist with shakedown and head counts; ensure security of gates/doors.
Monitor telephone, radio, and intercom; fill in for other employees as necessary; may serve on disciplinary committee.
Process daily monetary receipts, balances, and related records; assist with vendor and accounts payable oversight in Diversion Center responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of department policies, procedures, and corrections terminology; awareness of laws and ordinances related to confinement.
Knowledge of corrections procedures, first aid, CPR, and defensive tactics.
Interpersonal skills, observation, and self-defense capabilities; ability to work under stress and in confinement settings.
Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and staff; use independent judgment; perform calculations; plan and organize daily assignments.
Minimum Qualifications and Standards
High School Diploma or equivalent, or related education/training/experience.
Ability to meet BCOT certification requirements within twelve months of hire date.
Valid driver’s license.
One year of correctional officer experience preferred.
Additional qualifications for Correctional Corporal: two years as a BCOT-certified Correctional Officer; notary appointment certification (depending on assignment); P.O.S.T. Certification in Corrections; associate degree in Criminal Justice or related field preferred.
Work Schedule Twelve-hour shifts, rotating days off. Shifts are 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. All officers are required to work weekends. May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others. If required to operate a vehicle, must comply with ACC safety policies.
Emergency Position This position is designated as an emergency position requiring attendance at work under all types of emergency conditions (e.g., inclement weather, utility failure, fire, evacuations, etc.).
Hiring Incentive This position offers a one-time $3,000 hiring incentive paid in $1,000 increments (not added to base salary). Eligible newly-hired Correctional Officer candidates receive payments after: 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months of employment, contingent on satisfactory job performance and available funding/approval by the Manager.
