Additional Information:
1:1 position assigned to a 1st grade male student. Requires completion of the state mandated General Paraeducator Certificate and 28 hours of Fundamental Course of Study training within four months of hire.
Examples of Duties:
Assist a certificated teacher with instructional and personal care needs for students with a broad range of disabilities.
Provide academic interventions and assist students with activities of daily living.
Administer and log medications as assigned, as trained by the licensed school nurse.
Supervise students during recess, lunch, and bus loading/unloading.
Maintain student records and collect data for IEP goals.
Carry out sensory stimulation activities and use adaptive equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Provide instruction individually or in small groups; implement lesson/activity assigned by specialists.
Assist with feeding, dressing, toileting, diapering, and use of feeding pumps; restrain and calm students as needed.
Transport students as needed throughout the building premises.
Record student progress on data sheets, daily logs and prepare reports; maintain communication with classroom teacher and program administrator.
Adjust position of students with physical disabilities periodically; implement occupational therapy and physical therapy as instructed.
Prepare and serve lunches and snacks; clean dishes and eating area following snack periods.
Model positive behavior; correct inappropriate behavior and discipline according to district guidelines.
Assist teacher in adapting materials and activities; accompany students on field trips.
Participate in department staff meetings; provide information regarding students.
Maintain reliable attendance; adhere to district policy on tardiness and absences.
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
Perform intermittent catheterizations after required training.
Provide general clerical assistance; duplicate materials and complete necessary paperwork.
Supervise students during teacher’s brief breaks.
Perform related duties as assigned; may work in more than one classroom as assigned by building administrator.
Perform physical restraint of student if student is harm to self or others.
CONDITIONS:
May be confined to a work area for prolonged periods; may lift and move students or materials; may be exposed to bodily fluids and infectious disease; may be exposed to high noise levels; may perform field trips and off-site jobs; may be required to travel to other district sites; may be exposed to inclement weather; must be able to lift up to 25 pounds individually and team lift up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate degree or 72 credit hours of post‑secondary education or state test demonstrating knowledge and one year of experience working with special needs individuals.
CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to be trained within first 90 days.
Required to attend district restraint training and maintain certification.
Fingerprint clearance for background investigation (WSP, FBI).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of developmental, behavioral and physical disabilities; knowledge of subject areas and basic learning styles.
Effective instructional methods for students with disabilities; safe lifting and positioning methods.
Basic sign language skills.
Confidentiality, de‑escalation, communication, teamwork and ability to work in a diverse setting.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, team‑lift up to 50 pounds, and provide personal assistance such as feeding, diapering and toileting.
