Who We Are Academy Camps is an overnight sports‑specific sleepaway camp held on the campus of Suffield Academy (CT). Our 1‑week sessions serve boys and girls ages 10‑15 interested in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, squash, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Campers select one of our 8 “Academy Sports” and receive two intensive training sessions per day from our high‑performance coaching staff.
Our team combines high‑performance coaches, exemplary counselors, and experienced camp professionals passionate about the whole athlete. In addition to sports training, we deliver programming focused on Performance, Wellness, Mindset, and Leadership mixed with fun through a daily schedule of traditional sleepaway camp activities.
Position As a member of the AC Leadership Team, the Residential Life Director plays a pivotal role in ensuring the well‑being of both campers and staff, overseeing the counselor team and advocating for staff and campers alike. The director creates and promotes a camp environment centered around respect, mental wellness, and a rewarding camp experience.
Key Responsibilities
Camper Management – Own camper management, support emotional and social well‑being, address conflicts, and provide resources for homesickness and stress.
Dorm‑Staff Management – Lead dormitory staff, enforce curfew, ensure dorm cleanliness, and uphold dormitory rules.
Execute Dorm Placements – Support the Camp Director with camper and staff room assignments.
Staff Feedback & Meetings – Facilitate regular staff meetings, lead performance reviews, and foster staff growth.
Camper & Staff Nomination Management – Manage the AC Value Band Nomination process from announcement to celebration.
Execute Varsity Class Program – Lead the Varsity Class program with our oldest campers and ensure intentional growth opportunities.
Manage Parent Communications – Work with the leadership team to communicate with parents promptly and transparently.
Deliver Camper Surveys – Lead the process of gathering camper feedback to improve the camp experience.
Your Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor’s degree (or professional equivalent) + 4‑6 years professional experience with aligned proficiencies.
Prior Staff or Team Leadership experience – supervision, feedback, behavior management, and positive culture creation.
Experience managing camper behavior or equivalent youth management experience.
High executive functioning and proficiency in learning new tech and systems for digital communication and administrative organization.
Background in social work, counseling, or a related youth development field preferred.
Experience with parent communication in educational, recreational, or camp settings preferred.
Residential life and student management experience is a bonus.
Excellent relationship builder – quick to connect, build trust, and rapport.
Creative problem‑solver with an empathetic approach to customer service and team management.
Growth mindset – oriented toward learning and development; willing to receive and implement feedback and learn from mistakes.
Expectations, Compensation, and Benefits
Full‑time summer session: June 18 – August 8, with on‑site staff pre‑season training and post‑camp support.
Pre‑camp support starting May 1: 5‑10 hours/week covering onboarding, welcome calls, and training.
Compensation: $7,000‑10,000 plus room and board; travel stipend for relocation.
Residence on campus – room and board included on both campuses with state‑of‑the‑art athletic facilities.
Referral bonus: Earn $250 for each camper enrolled.
