Interim Director, Sterile Processing Department (SPD)
for a W2 Contract position based in Oakland, CA.
Schedule: Day , Monday through Friday, 5 8's, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Assignment Duration: 13 Weeks Day Compensation: This position offers a daily rate of $750 to $775 which equates to $3,750 to $3,875 per week (based on a 5-day workweek) Per Diems: Lodging: $145 per day and Meals & Incidentals: $92 per day Per diems are paid daily, 7 days a week, totaling $1,659 per week Total Weekly Compensation (Daily Rate + Per Diems): Between $5,409 to $5,534 per week Benefits: Paid sick leave, Paid holidays, Co-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, Cafeteria planaccess and 401(k) retirement plan. Summary: The Interim Director of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) provides strategic and operational leadership for all sterile processing functions across the healthcare system or designated region. This role ensures safe, compliant, and cost-effective decontamination, sterilization, assembly, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment. The Director leads the development and implementation of system-wide sterile processing policies and procedures, drives continuous improvement, oversees compliance and quality standards, and fosters a high-performance culture through effective leadership, staff development, and cross-department collaboration. Essential Functions: Develop and execute the strategic plan for the SPD aligned with organizational priorities. Lead system-wide initiatives to optimize SPD operations, workflows, and technology. Partner with executive leadership and perioperative services to ensure instrument and equipment readiness. Direct and oversee daily operations across multiple SPD sites or the system to ensure timely and safe sterile processing. Establish standardized protocols and monitor performance to ensure efficiency, quality, and compliance. Drive process improvements to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and improve clinical outcomes. Ensure full compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and accreditation standards (e.g., AAMI, CDC, Joint Commission). Lead audits and inspections, develop corrective action plans, and oversee risk mitigation. Implement robust quality assurance and infection prevention programs across all SPD operations. Build and lead a high-performing leadership team, providing mentorship, coaching, and succession planning. Promote a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and professional development across all SPD staff. Identify workforce development needs and oversee the design and delivery of training programs. Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring alignment with financial goals and resource utilization. Oversee procurement, inventory control, and vendor management for instruments, equipment, and supplies. Monitor capital needs and make strategic recommendations for technology upgrades and investments. Serve as the primary liaison between SPD and key stakeholders including Surgery, Nursing, Infection Prevention, Facilities, and Supply Chain. Collaborate with IT and clinical engineering to maintain integration of SPD systems with hospital technologies. Lead change initiatives across departments to align sterile processing practices with clinical operations. Qualifications: Minimum of 7 years of sterile processing, surgical services, or health care operations experience, with at least 5 years in progressive leadership roles. Bachelor's degree in Health Care Administration, Public Health, Nursing, Business, or related field; Master's degree preferred. Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required. Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) or Certified Sterile Processing Management (CSPM) preferred. Extensive knowledge of regulations and best practices related to sterile processing, infection control, and surgical instrumentation.
