We are seeking highly skilled and licensed
Stationary Engineers
to operate and maintain the
high-pressure boiler and chiller plants
at Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. This is a critical, round-the-clock role responsible for ensuring continuous, safe, and efficient operation of hospital utility systems across the entire campus. The ideal candidate must possess a valid
City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License
and a minimum of
five (5) years of experience
working with
high-pressure boilers
and
industrial/commercial HVAC systems
of comparable scale and complexity. Key Responsibilities:
Operate, monitor, and maintain four (4) Cleaver Brooks 35,000 lb/hr water tube boilers operating at 125 psi. Operate and maintain three (3) 1,200-ton Carrier chillers and associated systems in the main chiller plant. Conduct routine inspections of boilers, chillers, pumps, compressors, valves, and related equipment. Monitor system readings and control parameters to ensure optimal performance and safety compliance. Perform emergency and preventive maintenance as needed, ensuring minimal system downtime. Document operational activities and maintenance using logs, reports, and computerized systems. Maintain compliance with all safety protocols, operational guidelines, and environmental regulations. Respond to system alarms and facility service requests during assigned shifts. Conduct rounds of the Hines campus to verify proper function of HVAC and mechanical systems in all monitored buildings (see facility map). Qualifications:
Required License:
Valid
City of Chicago Stationary Engineer License
(must be active and in good standing) Experience:
Minimum
5 years of hands‑on experience
operating and maintaining high-pressure boilers and commercial/industrial HVAC systems of comparable size and complexity. Knowledge of:
High-pressure steam systems and safety protocols Chiller operations, including refrigeration cycles HVAC troubleshooting and controls Safety and emergency response procedures Facility mechanical systems monitoring best practices
Other Requirements:
Ability to work independently without supervision Ability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays Strong communication and problem-solving skills Must pass background check and be eligible to work in a federal facility
Work Environment:
This is a 24/7 operation in a hospital setting. Engineers will work indoors in mechanical rooms and control centers, and occasionally outdoors in all weather conditions. Protective equipment and adherence to safety standards are required. Schedule:
Rotating shifts
