The Duke Pediatric Surgical Hospitalist Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) provides direct patient care services to children 0-21 years in an in-patient setting in collaboration with the attending physician, fellows, and residents. There may be rare occasions where it is appropriate for this APP to care for patients beyond age 21 for a limited period. The APP performs physical exams, documents data, conducts procedures, orders tests, prescribes interventions, coordinates care and discharge, and provides direct patient care. This role involves working with pediatric patients on all surgical services at Duke Hospital, including orthopedics, urology, plastics, and abdominal transplants, as well as inpatient rehabilitative consults. The APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and organizational leadership. Job Eligibility Requirements
Education
NP: Graduate of an accredited DNP or MSN Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. PA: Graduate of ARC-accredited Physician Assistant program; Master's or Doctoral Degree strongly preferred. Certification
NP: PNP-AC certification required. PA: PA-C certification required. Licensure
NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with approval to practice as an NP. PA: Current unrestricted medical license issued by the NCMB with approval to practice as a PA. Experience
High acuity pediatric APP experience for at least 1 year is preferred. Physical and Mental Requirements
Ability to clearly articulate scope of practice and work within those guidelines in North Carolina and within Duke University Health System. Ability to independently seek resources and collaborate to solve complex problems. Effective communication with patients, families, healthcare team, and leadership. Use of sensory and cognitive functions for assessments, treatment, and follow-up. Use of fine motor skills. Ability to record activities, document assessments and interventions, and prepare reports. Proficiency with computers and learning new software. Provide leadership in clinical expertise and organizational goals. Navigational skills within hospital and DUHS facilities. Prolonged standing and walking, with the ability to lift at least fifty pounds. Maintain focus and organization. Work collaboratively across all personnel levels. Job Hours
