SUMMARY Firefly’s Ground Support Equipment (GSE) Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for a host of rapidly evolving demands ranging from owning and executing your own projects around site, to continuous improvement and LEAN efforts in our work centers, to aiding with the design or fabrication of complex ground systems. You will coordinate the procurement and fabrication of a massive portfolio of hardware supporting all of Firefly’s programs including (but not limited to) launch sites, test stands, transport fixtures, manufacturing and assembly jigs, proof fixtures, and payload integration systems. Firefly’s GSE team supports every program at Firefly: Alpha Launch, Eclipse Launch, Blue Ghost, and Elytra. Each day, you will work directly with senior leadership, engineers, welders, test technicians, procurement, vendors, and internal customers to facilitate high quality, high impact GSE builds. You will have the opportunity to leverage your knowledge of materials and fabrication techniques to influence and drive simplicity, manufacturability, and operability into mechanical and fluid systems. This position is located at our Rocket Ranch in Briggs, TX, just north of Cedar Park.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Design and Implement
process improvement projects at our Test Stands, in GSE work centers, and across the site
Facilitate and improve
upon existing work order process to improve efficiency between engineering drawing release and completion of fabrication, including drawing review, material procurement, material organization & kitting, Non-Destructive Testing, assembly, proof testing, coating, and commissioning.
Reconcile design intent with manufacturing
limitations by working directly with welders, technicians, and engineers
Perform make/buy decisions
to hit project budget & schedule requirements
Establish, manage, and leverage key vendor relationships
with key suppliers and internal customers
Advocate
for operability, serviceability, and manufacturability during the design process
Create and maintain schedules
to communicate build progress and manage expectations with stakeholders
Identify and Disposition
non-conformances of as-built products relative to their initial design
Assist design engineers by creating mBOM's, creating RFQ's, and managing virtual inventory
QUALIFICATIONS Required
Bachelors degree in Engineering or related technical field
3-5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment, working directly with welded structural assemblies, pipe & tube assemblies, large precision machines, sheet steel bending & cutting.
Knowledge of common NDE methods for weldments, including but not limited to: Fluorescent Dye Penetrant, Magnetic Particle, and Ultrasonic Methods
Experience with CAD software (Siemens NX preferred)
Experience with Odoo or other comparable MRP System
Organizational skills to consolidate and communicate progress and complex systems and deliverables
Knowledge of GD&T & familiarity with ASME Y14.5
Working/functional knowledge of basic fluid system components (i.e. valves, tubing, piping, flanges).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey methodologies for assembly and troubleshooting
Able to read and interpret technical drawings and assembly instructions
Strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
Ability to thrive in high stakes, stressful, short deadline environments
Critical thinking and strong decision making ability
Familiarity with AWS D1.1 & D17.1
Familiarity with ASME B31.3
Ability to lift 50lbs
Experience working at outdoor job sites and on shop floors, directly with operators, technicians and welders
Experience or willingness to operate or working near mobile equipment such as forklifts and cranes
Lift and Rigging experience
7+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment, working directly with welded structural assemblies, pipe & tube assemblies, large precision machines, sheet steel bending & cutting.
