Job Summary
Phlebotomist at Independence Health System performs venous and capillary phlebotomy, collects specimens for inpatient and outpatient laboratory testing, and accurately enters, verifies and processes orders and results.
Responsibilities
- Perform venous or capillary phlebotomy while following standard precautions and department protocols.
- Accurately place laboratory orders and track specimen turnaround in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Verify patient and specimen identification using two identifiers.
- Maintain specimen collection quality, including minimal redraws and acceptable blood culture contamination rates.
- Assist or perform additional specimen procurement techniques as required.
- Collect urine drug screen, alcohol, nasal and throat swab specimens following established protocols.
- Process laboratory orders, document specimen receipt and assess specimen appropriateness.
- Respond to pages within an acceptable timeframe and prioritize requests.
- Interact effectively with healthcare providers, co‑workers and patients to support quality laboratory services.
- Acknowledge and execute additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED or next level of higher education.
- Completion of Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant Training Program or six months experience performing phlebotomy preferred.
- Knowledge of coding, basic math and payer/insurance benefits preferred.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and general office equipment preferred.
- Medical terminology, specimen knowledge and laboratory information system experience preferred.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in a healthcare setting.
Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Act 33 with renewal.
- Act 34 with renewal.
- Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal.
Position Type & Hours
- Scheduled based on operational need (rotating shifts, standby, on‑call, etc.).
- Travel may be expected locally between system locations.

Physical Demands
Tasks require frequent standing, walking, and the use of hand & arm coordination. Lifting up to 10 lb. is occasionally required. Work is performed in a controlled clinical environment with mandatory PPE (goggles, face shield, mask) as per CDC guidelines.
