Job Description
Incumbents to a position in this class perform construction and repair work on sewers, manholes and receivers for the city's sewer systems. Work is performed in accordance with contract plans and specifications and is reviewed by the Sewer Construction Inspector. This position differs from the position of Maintenance Assistant (Sewer Cleaning) in that incumbents must have the knowledge and skill used in construction activities. Incumbents may be on call 24 hours a day. Direct supervision is received from Sewer Maintenance Supervisor I.
Examples of Work
- Constructs and repairs sewers, receivers, manholes, catch basins, tunnel work, connections, etc.
- Mixes concrete and mortar; assists in laying brick and sewer pipe, concrete and patching
- Performs excavations, shoring, rod burning and cement finishing
- Repairs and replaces street receivers, broken manholes, brick or tile sewers, catch basins, etc.
- Operates air compressors, asphalt breakers, bobcat power winches, cement mixers, water pumps, gas tampers, and other equipment used in the construction or repair of sewers, manholes and receivers
- Drives truck to and from work site
- Prepares detailed reports of work performed
- Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications
- Applicants must have two years of full-time experience in sewer maintenance work
- Applicants must possess a current Class A or Class B New York State Drivers License at time of appointment and must be maintained during employment
- Proof of education must be presented at time of appointment
- Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet full-time experience requirements
Special Examination
Subject of Examination - Written Test (Relative Weight 100%)
Examination will test for knowledge, skills and/or abilities in such areas as:
- Pumps, motors, and valves
- Mechanical devices and tools used in maintenance work
- Sanitary and storm sewer systems
- Methods and equipment used in cleaning sewer systems
The use of a calculator is recommended for this examination. Devices with typewriter keyboards, spell checkers, personal digital assistants, address books, language translators, dictionaries, cell phones or any similar devices are prohibited. You may not bring books or other reference material. Cell phones and any other electronic devices are also prohibited.
