Lamar University - Assistant Professor, African American History Salary: Location: Job Type: Job Number: Closing Date: Home Org: FLSA: Job Summary The Department of History at Lamar University is seeking applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in African American history, specializing in any time period between 1865 to the present. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in History or a closely related field, either completed or expected by August 2026. Responsibilities include teaching upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate's area of specialization, as well as contributing to the U.S. history survey curriculum. The position also requires active engagement in scholarly research and publication. Deliver high-quality instruction using effective and engaging teaching strategies across undergraduate and graduate history courses. Maintain a productive research agenda that includes publishing in peer-reviewed journals and or pursuing external research funding. Contribute to academic service through active participation in departmental, college, and university committees and initiatives. Minimum Qualifications Ph.D. in History or a related field. Key Competencies Strong research and analytical skills. Ability to design and deliver engaging lectures and coursework. Ability to perform academic research in degree area of specialty. Demonstrated commitment to service to the university, profession, and community. Physical Requirements: Able to lift 25 lbs. and perform a variety of physical tasks including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, stair climbing, and walking between buildings. Job Conditions: Generally, follows the academic calendar while working in a temperature controlled environment.
