Software Engineer Manager

Within Azure Core Microsoft Capacity Infrastructure Services (MCIS) Decommission, we play a vital role in the modernization and health of Azure’s server fleet. By safely and efficiently retiring legacy servers, we help ensure that Microsoft’s cloud services continue to deliver reliable and high‑performance experiences to customers worldwide.
Our work involves close coordination with backend and infrastructure teams to transition workloads to newer, more efficient hardware. We collaborate with backend service teams to release control of outdated systems and partner with datacenter teams to ensure compliant removal from facilities. This process is essential to Azure’s evolution and contributes meaningfully to the sustainability and agility of Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.
As a Software Engineer Manager in Azure Core MCIS, you will lead a skilled team focused on maintaining the operational efficiency of our server fleet. Responsibilities
Coaches and supports partnership with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements within teams.
Coaches teams and drives identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
Coaches team members within the team in producing extensible and maintainable code.
Coaches team to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items in coordination with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers).
Coaches others and acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers across products, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.
Seeks new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale and shares knowledge with other engineers.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
OR equivalent experience.
4+ years of experience in software development, testing and technical design skills.
4+ years working with or developing software for distributed systems and scalable cloud environments, and familiarity with client/server API designs.
1+ year people management experience.
Other Requirements
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science
OR related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript
OR Python

Compensation Software Engineering M4 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 – $234,700 per year. The base pay range in the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area is USD $158,400 – $258,000 per year.
