Civil/Structural System Engineer 1/2 – Detailed Description Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking a Civil/Structural System Engineer (Levels 1 or 2) to support the Weapons Facilities Operations portfolio. The Engineer will act as the owner’s representative for engineering across facilities, coordinating design, maintenance, safety, and configuration management activities to support the Laboratories stockpile stewardship mission.

Responsibilities

Serve as the owner’s representative for assigned facilities, interfacing with design teams, maintenance, and operations.

Control and maintain the technical baseline for facility equipment, manage facility system configuration using a risk‑based graded approach, and support Conduct of Engineering (COE) programs.

Review design outputs for impact on technical baseline and master equipment lists.

Define maintenance requirements, track and trend corrective and preventative maintenance, conduct facility walk‑downs, and prepare Facility Health Reports.

Coordinate with the Pressure Safety Officer (PSO) on facility pressure safety systems.

Develop civil/structural drawings, details, and calculations, and provide technical interface to existing facility systems and components.

For Level 2, mentor junior engineers, review and provide guidance on civil/structural drawings, and build strong stakeholder relationships.

Minimum Job Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution.

Level 1: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience; Level 2: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.

Advanced degrees and registration as Engineer in Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) are highly desirable.

Knowledge of DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles.

Experience in facility systems and nuclear or industrial facility operations is preferred.

Desired Qualifications

Completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam.

Design or operations experience in nuclear, accelerator, or industrial facilities.

Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit tools.

Experience with DOE, LANL Engineering Standards, and Conduct of Engineering principles.

Work Location Los Alamos, New Mexico – onsite.

Position Commitment Regular appointment; one‑year minimum continuous service required to remain eligible for future positions.

Security Clearance Q clearance required. Applicants must be U.S. citizens and meet DOE background investigation requirements.
