Engineering Technician Trainee / Senior Engineering Technician (NY HELPS) Region 4 – NYS Department of Transportation

Base pay range $38,571.00/yr – $65,061.00/yr

Responsibilities

Perform civil engineering technical support activities for engineering projects and programs.

Under the direction of an Engineer in Charge, inspect contractor operations to assure compliance with plans and specifications; complete material tests; interpret plans and specifications; convey information to contractors; prepare daily work reports; document contractor operations; take measurements; perform computations; record item pay quantities.

Travel throughout the Region; maintain a valid driver’s license or demonstrate ability to meet travel requirements.

May serve in the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

Qualifications Minimum qualifications for the NY HELPS program (open competitive position):

For Engineer Technician Trainee:

either

1) one year of experience in assisting with engineering-related work and high school diploma;

or

2) 18 semester credit hours of college coursework in relevant subjects;

or

3) graduation from a high‑school technical program in relevant areas.

Upon successful completion of the 52‑week traineeship, candidates will be automatically advanced to the Senior Engineering Technician position.

Senior Engineering Technician: in addition to the trainee requirements,

either

1) two years of experience in similar work and high school diploma;

or

2) an associate's degree in relevant subjects.

Certifications such as CAD/CAM, construction technology, drafting, engineering graphics, or electronics may substitute for experience; 36 semester college credit hours may substitute for experience at the rate of 18 semester credit hours = one year.

Candidates must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis and have necessary citizenship documentation.

For the duration of the NY HELPS program, the title may be filled via a non‑competitive appointment without an examination, but all minimum qualifications must be met. Employees may later be converted to competitive status.
