Senior / Principal Forensic Engineer – Civil/Structural
Engineering Design & Testing Corp. (EDT) is a professional services organization providing forensic engineering, technical consulting, fire investigation, risk mitigation, and associated services. Founded in 1978, EDT has more than 45 years of experience delivering objective civil/structural, mechanical, electrical forensic engineering analysis, accident reconstruction services, and expert witness litigation support.
Compensation Base pay range: $130,000 – $180,000 per year. Actual pay will be based on skills and experience.
Position Summary Serves as the Engineer‑In‑Charge (EIC) managing and conducting investigations of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and structural components (roofing, fenestration, foundations, building envelopes). Performs structural analysis, hazard and damage assessments, lab and field testing of construction materials, design and construction defect evaluations, and premise liability evaluations. Must be a licensed professional engineer with knowledge of local, state, and federal building codes (ACI, AISC, ASCE, IBC). Expertly provides fact‑based, technically sound opinions to insurance adjusters, attorneys, and other clients. Must be willing to travel and be physically able to climb, stand, walk, and kneel for extended periods. Able to work in extreme temperatures and weather, indoors and outdoors, accessing roofs, scaffolds, lifts, and enclosed spaces with proper PPE and training. Self‑motivated, works independently and in teams, dedicated to ethics, quality, and customer service.
Hybrid Role The successful candidate must reside in the general Hartford, CT area and be able to report to EDT’s Windsor, CT office.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Work independently, ensuring timely and cost‑effective execution of assigned cases.
Act as primary client contact, coordinating case budgets, work orders, site visits, cost estimates, and deliverables; provide status updates at least every other week.
Assist in developing and updating scopes of work for assigned cases.
Make independent decisions on analysis and testing methodologies and resource selection.
Manage resources, including in‑house and third‑party sub‑contractors, to meet deadlines.
Engage other disciplines to cover areas outside own expertise.
Conduct onsite investigations, testing, and gather field data on residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
Review and interpret relevant building codes as needed.
Prepare repair or replacement cost estimates.
Participate in conference calls and meetings with clients regarding investigation status and results.
Prepare forensic reports detailing observations, documentation, data, testing results, research, and conclusions; issue reports within ten business days of site exam unless otherwise agreed.
Provide technical support and testify as an expert witness in depositions and court proceedings as necessary.
Collaborate with clients, colleagues, attorneys, and industry professionals.
Maintain weekly case‑status updates and work with the Regional Engineering Manager and Chief Engineer to address any client or case issues.
Conduct research and stay current with industry best practices and emerging technologies.
Develop technical topics for publication, industry presentations, and training.
Support marketing and business development, including client‑relations meetings, conferences, presentations, marketing materials, blogs, and white papers.
Participate in the mentorship program and support training of new engineers.
Secure and maintain professional licensure (at company expense) in all states where investigations are conducted, and keep current with continuing education.

B.S. or M.S. in Civil or Structural Engineering.
7+ years’ experience in civil/structural engineering, preferably with residential or commercial properties.
Experience in storm damage and building envelope evaluation or forensic engineering preferred.
P.E. License with NCEES registration required.
Valid driver’s license required.
