HDR is a leading engineering firm committed to an inclusive culture and innovation. This position leads technical work on rail traction electrification and overhead contact systems across North America.
Responsibilities
Lead projects involving electrification distribution design for streetcar, electrified bus, light rail, heavy rail, commuter rail, and high‑speed rail projects operating on overhead contact or third rail systems.
Design OCS packages, including sectionalizing, equipment sizing and protection, SCADA and control‑center interface, system feeders and returns, traction power distribution systems, bonding and grounding.
Mentor and develop staff in traction power and OCS design practices.
Coordinate project management tasks: client coordination, scoping, fee preparation, scheduling, budget tracking, and delivery of work products.
Engage in client pursuits, opportunity tracking, and proposal development.
Travel to installation and planning sites as required; long‑term field assignments may be available.
Skills and Attributes
Technical competence in rail electrification with experience designing AC and DC traction power and distribution systems.
Industry standing in technical committees and established relationships with rail and transit clients throughout North America.
Strong organizational and communication skills; proven ability to lead teams and interface directly with clients across the full project life‑cycle.
Experience using CADD tools and completing designs independently.
Demonstrated leadership, business development, and strategic planning capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (advanced degree preferred).
Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
15+ years of experience in railway electrification systems.
Active participation in AREMA, APTA, IEEE technical committees.
Experience with intercity, commuter, heavy rail, light rail, streetcar, and electrified bus operations.
Experience leading TPS/OCS teams as a department head or agency leader.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
10+ years of related work experience.
Minimum five years of project management experience.
Recognized professional engineering license (PE or equivalent).
Proficiency in MS Office and MS Project; Access experience is an advantage.
Demonstrated leadership, business development, and strategic planning skills.

Travel: Home office with short‑term travel to installation and planning sites; long‑term field assignments may be available.
