What You Will Do The Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE‑DO) and the Project Engineering Group (PFE‑PE) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) are seeking a Project Engineer. The selected candidate will be involved throughout the lifespan of a project, meeting with customers and users of LANL’s Plutonium Facility (PF‑4) to understand and develop Statements of Need and Scopes of Work that resolve technical facility issues, enhance process or equipment/facility performance, and increase reliability of the Plutonium Facility. They will engage with Design Engineers and System Engineers to develop technical solutions, facilitate and champion design development, review, and acceptance, and work with Work Execution and Construction Management to implement designs while managing change control. Throughout all project phases the Project Engineer ensures technical solutions continue to meet the facility user’s needs, and at project completion manages close‑out activities, collecting and compiling documentation in accordance with LANL’s Document Control mandates. Projects may involve modifications to accredited nuclear safety systems, renovations of office spaces, and other work inside or outside the nuclear facility footprint. The Project Engineer will serve as the primary champion and facilitator of all technical aspects of the project, ensuring high‑quality technical design documentation throughout the project life cycle.

What You Need Minimum Job Requirements
Experience managing technical teams and interfacing with other engineering disciplines
Understanding of technical scope development
Entry‑level understating of common engineering design document deliverables
Understanding of design development and design review process (30%/60%/90%) with limited prior experience facilitating design reviews
Project Engineering Qualifications Test: All Project Engineers will be required to pass an Oral Qualifications Test within 12 months of their hiring date
Administrative Subcontract Technical Representative: All Project Engineers will be required to be qualified as an Administrative Subcontract Technical Representative (AdSTR) within 3 months of their hiring date
Education/Experience Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited college or university and a minimum of 3 years of practical work experience necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above. Advanced engineering or technical degree is highly desired.
Desired Qualifications
Basic knowledge of applicable codes and standards in common use at DOE and DOD facilities (ASME, NQA‑1, IBC, IEBC, IEEE, NFPA, etc.)
Basic knowledge of applicable LANL standards (Engineering Standards Manual (ESM), Conduct of Engineering, Conduct of Maintenance, Conduct of Operations, etc.)
Awareness of common project schedule and cost tracking methodologies and programs (P6, MS Project, EVMS, etc.)
Basic understanding of US government contracting or procurement methods/processes, specifically related to subcontract Architecture & Engineering agreements
Training/Certifications Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desirable.
Essential Job Functions General Physical Mobility: standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility: use of both hands, both arms, both legs, both feet, carry/lift up to 20 pounds.
Work Schedule This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Environment Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, and working overtime or an irregular schedule.
Work Location The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position Commitment Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
