Job Description Akkodis is seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Design Engineer specializing in Body Exterior: Body Structure (Sheet Metal). This role is based onsite in Long Beach, CA and supports a dynamic, fast-paced automotive development environment.
The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in automotive seat design and engineering, demonstrate strong initiative, and operate with autonomy. This role requires a first-principles approach to problem‑solving, robust engineering fundamentals, and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the design and development of 2nd row seat systems, including structures, mechanisms, foam, and trim.
Utilize 3DX CAD tools to create and manage complex designs.
Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—including manufacturing, quality, and program management—to align on technical requirements.
Develop and execute timing plans for assigned components and systems.
Identify, communicate, and resolve technical risks.
Apply validation methods such as CAE, physical testing, and analytical techniques.
Assess industrialization feasibility, including tooling, supplier sub‑assembly, and vehicle‑level constraints.
Conduct interface and assembly feasibility studies covering static/dynamic clearances, joint analysis, GD&T, and dimensional variation.
Document quality history and participate in technical design reviews using DFMEA, DVPR, PCA, PFMEA, and control plans.
Manage program financials, including landed cost and engineering budgets for prototype parts, tools, and development expenses.
Utilize engineering tools such as Robustness Checklist, Demonstration Matrix, Boundary Diagram, Interface Matrix, and P‑Diagram.
Support vehicle builds and ensure alignment with overall program timing.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
Minimum 5 years of experience in automotive seat design and development.
Proficiency in 3DX CAD and related engineering tools.
Strong understanding of the full product development lifecycle.
Proven ability to work independently with minimal guidance.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Experience with DFMEA, DVPR, and other quality documentation.
Familiarity with manufacturing processes and supplier interaction.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with OEMs.
Knowledge of regulatory standards and customer requirements in automotive seating.
Background in managing engineering budgets and program financials.
