Pay range: $47,346.72/yr – $47,346.72/yr (based on skills and experience).
Job Description The Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice is a multi‑faceted agency that serves juveniles of the Commonwealth. While striving to hold youth accountable, the Department creates opportunities for sentenced, committed, probated, or detained youth to develop social and career skills, equipping them for re‑entry into communities as productive citizens.
This highly responsible position in the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet requires maturity, reliability, and self‑discipline. The employee is expected to act responsibly at all times, demonstrate leadership, and treat all staff, youth, and persons with respect.
Responsibilities
Supervises institutional operations and a shift in the absence of a Shift Captain.
Co‑leads group counseling sessions and supervises/monitors activities of juveniles within DJJ.
Handles routine disciplinary problems and investigates all unusual occurrences.
Maintains shift logs, completes incident reports, and assists juveniles in complaint procedures.
Provides guidance and informal counseling to Correctional Officers.
Ensures juveniles are aware of their rights, policies, and procedures.
Transports juveniles as needed.
Considers routine building maintenance, housekeeping, and reports corrections needed.
Attends staff meetings, case conferences, and trainings as assigned.
Participates in physical efforts assisting youth with recreational and work‑related projects.
Additional Information
This position is deemed essential and is required to perform mandatory operations; therefore, the incumbent is not eligible for Adverse Weather Leave.
May be required to work overtime and any shift as needed and directed.
Required to complete the Department of Juvenile Justice Training Academy (two weeks on the job, four weeks at the academy in Louisville, KY). Overnight lodging and travel are provided.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
High school graduate.
Experience, Training, or Skills:
Two years in corrections, law enforcement, criminal justice, social work dealing with rehabilitation of offenders, or in the supervision and care of young adults (ages 12‑21) in a residential, correctional, group home, detention or day treatment program.
Substitute Education for Experience:
Associate’s degree substitutes for six months of required experience; Bachelor’s degree substitutes for one year of required experience; successful completion of the Training Academy substitutes for one year.
Substitute Experience for Education:
None.
Special Requirements:
Must be twenty‑one years of age, possess a valid driver’s license, and be willing to complete the Training Academy within six months of employment.
Must maintain any required licensure or certification for the length of employment.
Working Conditions Work environment is hazardous due to working in a state correctional facility. May be exposed to hazards associated with operating a motor vehicle while providing transportation services.
